In responce to the comment in "ask the cuemaker". Here is some pic's of a Goncalo Alves cue, as well as a wicked piece of Bacote cue. Both were made by me, and the Bacote is still available.
Thanks,
Jon

I think the wrapped cue is hot! how do they play? the top one is goncalo alves right? I know bacote has more grain like the bottom cue without wrap.

I think the repetitive question of asking how a cue plays is moronic. What do you expect as the answer?. It plays like shit?. A cue only plays a good as the person holding it.

I was looking for an answer as to how stiff the shaft is. I know a cue is only as good as the person holding it. I can play well with a $50 "players" cue if it's nice, or I can play really bad with a $2000 cue that even though it's made by a prominent cue-maker, has a bad shaft.

well, spitz,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it DOES look ugly :):):) anyway,,,,the pics are too far away.

I happen to like the figure on that Goncalo Alves wood... I do have mixed feelings about how the wood was presented on the cue in terms of a total package.

I believe there is a way to get a nice impact on such wood. I'd consider doing a project using the same wood. The Miltonio I have uses Brazilian Goncalo Alves. ;)

Goncalo Alves is a lovely wood that Reminds ME of Coffee Flavored Ice Cream with a Chocolate Swirl running through it.

I many years ago had the Famous Pistol Grip Builder Guy Hogue (while he was still LAPD) build me Two Sets of Custom Grip for my Duty & Off Duty Weapon.

The Goncalo Alves Hogue use was exceptionally figured, and Fitted to my Hand like a Custom Taylor Suit, and of Course CHECKERED for a Lefty.

Like I said to me Goncalo Alves Reminds ME of Coffee Flavored Ice Cream with a Chocolate Swirl running through it. Lovely Wood. Also Very HARD.... :p

My first good cue was a goncalo alves Viking. Although that Viking was hardly a superior specimen of the wood, I took a liking to goncalo alves. I later got a custom goncalo alves cue that was gorgeous and hit a ton.

You have to be careful when ordering a goncalo alves cue, because the wood can have a few different looks. In its least attractive state, it looks like a burnt orange crayon. The next step up is a brilliant orange with dark stripes and figuring. The nicest I've seen is a dark orange with a figuring that I'd describe as a weathered western look. I've seen several Southwest and DPK Omega cues with this nice look, and Brian Mordt had some nice ones on his Web site. When I order the goncalo alves plain jane I've been thinking about, it'll probably be a Southwest because of their experience with the wood. I was thinking about asking Kerry Zylr to make it, but I have other ideas for a cue made by him.

Bruce, I remember seeing the goncalo alves grip in Hogue's catalog. I went with pau ferro, which is another knockout. Those grips felt and looked great on my Ruger, and I saw pau ferro look equally as handsome in a six-pointer Southwest.
