gouges in slate

just bought an old bar table {my first ever table} and not knowing what to look for I got had, days after I got it home I tore the old cloth off to uncover what was suppose to be the top of the slate was the bottom of the slate with heavy machining marks while the actual top of the slate had deep gouges in it. My question is can I use the slate in the inverted way? Or is there a way to repair the top smooth side that has gouges?

If for reason you don't get an answer in this forum, you might want to try the table mechanics forum. There's less traffic there, hence your question will stay on the front page longer. There are tons of really knowledgeable table mechanics there and I have no doubt you will get an answer. Best of luck!

They can fix broken slates...they can fix gouges...probably with bondo or something similar is my "guess"

check on ask the mechanic....I am fairly sure it can be fixed...the trick is getting the right guy to fix it.
