Graphite Cues?

I'd love to hear some opinions about graphite and/or composite cues. Are they any good compared to wood? It certainly seems that some type of modern composite material will eventually replace wood as the choice for cues, just as they have for many other previous wood products such as golf clubs, etc. Thanks.

Well that's what I thought at first, but I don't like wearing a glove and a wood shaft seems to slide through my fingers easier than a graphite cue. The graphite cue I tried seemed to "stick" in my fingers rather than glide.

Also I have had my shaft modified in the past. You can't turn down a graphite shaft to my knowledge.

Graphite cues have an advantage in that they resist warping much better than wood. Most players however, do not like the feel of the resin coated shaft and will wear a glove when using a fiberglass or graphite cue.
There is nothing wrong with using a graphite cue or a glove if that is what you like.
I see no reason you could not play as well with one of them as you could with any other cue.
I disagree with you that they will replace the Maple shaft as a lot of players prefer the feel of a well maintained wood shaft.

When earl strickland started playing with those cuetecs and breaking with a graphite cue more than ten years ago, it was said that maple shafts would have been extinct by now. They were wrong.

It's a matter of preference, but composites and wood have different properties and if you look around most pool players prefer maple shafts.

Graphite shafts are still in an infant stage. They are still evolving. Sooner or later they can imitate the feel and the look of a real maple wood instead of a classic black. Wait and see.

What would you rather have?
An imitation or the real thing?

I agree with parvus about the infancy stage and evolving. I think it's eventually going to go far beyond just matching a wood shaft in looks. When they finally get it right, they'll be able to match each and any shaft in flex, bend point, weight, and weight distribution and be able to go from one end of the spectrum to the other in each of those areas allowing for far greater options. They haven't even scratched the surface in pool shafts like they have in golf for consistency and improved playability. It'll come one day......
