help id old butterfly splice....

just picked this up yesterday for $10.

it is a one piece cue, with a collar "separating" the "shaft" and "handle"
the shaft section above the collar is 39" long.
the handle section below the collar is 21" long. (over all length is 60")

just wanted to know if it is worth anything before i chop it up.

When you say chop it up, do you mean to make a 2 piece cue out of it, or to throw it away. It seems way to nice to throw away. I don't think you have anything that is worth hundreds. Can you slide the collar, or is it an integral part of the cue? Sometimes 2 piece cues will seize up if they are left together and there are temperature changes, particularly cold to hot. I have never seen an old 1 piece cue with a collar before, other than the old Brunswicks with collars for the owner's name, but I believe all of those could be removed.
 
yeah, someone put a cheap plastic ferrule/ tip combo (oversized) on it.

i almost hope it's wothless...... should make a nice jump cue ( that's why i bought it)

There is good possibility that the cue can be not only salvaged but become a wonderful cue.

I would start by removing the shaft at the plastic collar. I would then remove the plastic collar and replace with phenolic. This would become the joint for the new shaft.

I would then extend the butt section with another piece of exotic wood that would contrast nicely with the existing wood.

Another possibility would be to remove 3 inches from the butt and replace it with handle wood that would ultimately be wrapped.

Please don't just whack it - it is too nice a cue. :)

that's what i was thinking too.....

i just measured the shaft, (just below the the slip on plastic ferrule) and it is 12mm.

well it is DEFINATELY a one piece cue.

i removed the collar yesterday, it was loose when i got it, you could just spin it around, and it definately wasn't cheap plastic. it was hard as hell!

which leads me to my next question....... how was that put on? it (was) a one piece collar for sure.

It may be glued together and is definitely made from two pieces of wood. If you look closely, you will see that the grain pattern in the lower half doesn't match up with the shaft end. It can be seen in your picture as well. If you do something with it, I would, as mentioned earlier, cut the shaft section off and make somethink with what is left. It appears that the section where the collar was is the same as the butt section, so another collar and joint could probably be added, and you could use the butterfly section as the forearm, have the cuemaker add a wrap section using the butterfly as a short splice. Then you could have them make any type of butt for the cue you want. I would consider, if as you mentioned earlier, you were going to make a jump cue out of it, that you have a jump/break cue made. It would be really nice.
