Help! Pool Table maintenance

I play at a very busy pool hall that has a table cleaning schedule that is less than (IMO) satisfactory.

What is a good shedule for brushing (860 Simonis) 9ft Gold Crowns.
What is a good schedule for vacuuming ?

Would you ever consider cleaning a table by spraying a cloth with windex and just brushing the surface chalk up?

Opinions please..

Thanks

Tom

Table cleaning,

I do them a little differantly than most folks do. I brush from the head to the foot.[breaking end to the rack end]. Then I take and vacuum the table moving again in the same direction. Be sure to move towards the rack and pick up the vacuum, move back, and repeat again, and never use a sweeping motion back and forth.

Then I take a small damp cloth and whipe the playing surface and the rails down, and then clean out the pockets. The rails, pockets and table will dry within a few minutes.

Blud,

Your the MAN!! That's exactly what I used to do when I worked at a pool hall. Keeps the tables nice and clean.

Tom,

You have a bigger problem where you're at; they have talcum powder at every table. That's some bad stuff for the table. It gets under the cloth and clumps and it is really hard to clean. And, you might not want to use moisture on those tables considering all the talcum that's used. It will make that talc clump even more. I'm not sure what the best solution is other than staying away from the damp cloth in your cleaning process.

Blud,

Thanks, that's the exact way I've been doing it for years at the other pool hall I worked.

What about the schedule.. is it everyday or what?

RickW. (sorry I missed you the other nite..)
I am aware of the talc.. problem.. it just adds to the chalk that collects under the cloth and turns to an abrasive element that wears the cloth from underneath worse than the stuff on top....

I am looking for a schedule.. more than a method.

Brushing the cloth daily is ok.. but how often is vacuuming needed?

Tom,

I think it really just depends on how clean you want the tables. If you have OCD, you could vacuum the table every time after it was used. I know what you're getting at and I'm not trying to be flippant, I'm just trying to make the point that it's really just up to you and how clean you want the tables. Another thing, with that talc and the fact that you're not going to be able to get rid of it, I'd clean them more often than not.

This is the same way i do it at the poolhall that i work at. I do ours once a week, more than that would be overkill.

Mark this day on the calender, for the first time in history we all agree on the same thing.:D

Rick,,, you made me laugh out loud.. OCD..

I'm not doing this work, but I wanted to make sure it was going to be done correctly if it was to be done at all.

I strongly believe that vacuuming will increase the playability of 860 Samonis between recoverings.

Have you ever taken a cue ball and rubbed in on a cloth that has some chalk dust in a small area? You can feel the difference between the no chalk dust---chalk dust---no chalk dust...

Besides... dirty tables really make your bridge hand nasty looking after a few games. If there is that much dirt (chalk, talc and real dirt) on the tables, the cloth will take a beating and will wear out faster than if it were kept clean.

Just trying to make my playing conditions better..

I totally agree with you Tom. Another thing that happens on a dirty table is "cling". The balls get dirty and they don't play the way they should especially on the cuts.

Hey, don't laugh about my condition okay?

Vacuum the tables every 12 hours of play or once a day, whichever comes first.

Polish the balls on the same schedule.

Lets get that equipment looking clean and sharp.

I agree Larry, i should have editted my post. I should have put during the summer months when it isn't that busy.During the summer we may only have 2 or 3 tables going a day. Obviously if it's the same table's being used they are vaccuumed more frequintley. Our balls are cleaned daily as are the table rails.

We only use Masters chalk and Dufferin house cues( Canadian ).

See Larry, I can be nice.:D
