History behind spliced cues

Hello all,

I like the look of a standard spliced house cue and standard sneaky petes (like the Duffering Phantom). I'd love to have a set of exotic wood petes to use as house cues for my home table, but my question is regarding the history of this construction technique. It seems to have been in use for a long time. It seems to me that a cue _could_ be built from a single piece of wood. Does anybody know the history behind this wood jointing method as used in pool cues ?

Thanks,

Dave
