1) Set up the break, break it up, try to keep shooting balls till miss, then start all over again.

2) Set up the break, break it up, shoot ALL 14 balls no matter if missing a ball(s) or not, then stary over again.

3) Others (please specify)

What do you think??

Practicing

I believe the best way to practice 8-ball & 9-ball:

8-Ball: Start out by taking your break shot. (this way you are practicing your break at the same time). Then see if you can run out. If you miss during your run, then you become your opponent and try to run out the other set of balls. If you do not miss during your first run but get stuck. Play a Safe and see if you did it properly. If so. Re-rack and start over.

9-ball: You can start with a break shot or throw out the nine balls.
Take ball in hand on the one ball & try to run out. Once again, if you get stuck, play a Safe (same as 8-ball practice).

14-1 will make you a better player over all by allowing you to see patterns easier & make you learn to pocket balls at a high percentage.

14.1: It is best to set up a break shot, breaking the rack up and go from that point on while practicing. However,do practice the opening break shot by it self, b/c there is a good chance that you will be the one that has to take that opening shot to start a match. Also, go ahead and try to make shot or play a safe after you practice your opening break. Try to get use to taking that first long shot like a game situation.
During your practice, play a safe if you get stuck on a ball and you do not have a shot as you are practicing a normal run. Then see if your safe was good enough to cause another player to play a safe, take a shot from that point or play safe again. You can do this a few times like during a match. After a point, just re-rack with another break shot and start up again. It never gets boring. Hope this helps.

when i practice 8ball, i break and try to run out. when i do not, i turn into my opponent and try to run out. if i do, i have just lost a game to my equal.

when practicing 14.1, on misses, i re-rack and start over. sometimes i will run the loose balls but i won't count them in my run total.

I practice the same way. 9 and 10 ball I play the ghost.

I say always keep shooting regardless of missing, just make sure to reset your run to zero;)

The reason being, if you rarely make it into the second rack you won't be getting a lot of practice setting up a break ball or doing much in the way of end patterns. Also you will get a lot more practice with a variety of different break shots rather than just your favorites.

I like my practice to mirror game situations as much as possible. Besides how often does your run start on a break shot? The other benefit to those with lower high runs, it's conisderably easier to run 20 balls starting with 8 on the table than all 14. :)
