How do you arrive at the 4 ½’x9’ measurements on a 4 ½’x9’ table?

The incongruities of pool terminology can be puzzling for someone new to this game. How do you arrive at the 4 ½’x9’ measurements on a 4 ½’x9’ table? How do you use the diamond system for banking? A side pocket bank is okay, but a cross-corner bank will always be long because the corner “diamond” is not equidistance in relation to the playing surface. And what ever happened to these diamonds anyway? Is a ninety degree cut shot theoretically the maximum angle you can cut a ball? Knowledgeable players who have played bar table pool with the big ball know that with English it’s possible to exceed that maximum. Just some questions and observations for discussion and debate.

4½ x 9 foot is measured from the cushion points... which is 50 inches by 100 inches (the 2:1 ratio). This does not include the rail surface that can be as much as 6 inches.

And there are two 4 x 8's. One is 44 x 88 the other is 46 x 92.

And sometimes you aim at the diamond itself while other times you aim at the cushion point even with the diamond.

The more I read about it the more confused I get. Especially when I get all through the reading and then find it it only works for the 4 x 8 (Which one? I don't know) and you have to compensate for the 4 x 9.

Sometimes I could just imagine Abott & Costello doing a routine on the diamond system.

jjinfla, sometimes it seems the diamonds have a mind of their own! Actually, I learned the diamond system from books. That being said though, the books give you a general system. You still need to try out the theories and make subtle adjustments until you figure out the feel of the system. For example, when kicking two rails, you need to figure out the speed and cueball spin, if any, that makes the system work. Once you have the feel though, the systems become very reliable. Then again, the feel may change from table to table (different types of rubber in rails, different height of rails which effects cueball spin off of rail, how new is the cloth?, does the ball "slide coming off the rails?) Then again, the pros have hit the shots so many times that they just eye up the shot and fire!

The only advise I have for you is practice by yourself just hitting balls, and most importantly, PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU OBSERVE! This is what eventually becomes engraved in your brain and turns into "feel". Good luck!

Anybody else up at 4 am this morning? On espn2 they had a show on with Alision Fisher. They were showing stuff about pool.......about weights of the balls.......transfering weight......some crazy stuff. I can't be the only one that has seen this show. They showed some really usless stuff.....imo. It might have been a learning show.....that happened to be about pool. It talked about measuring the angles after contact......and how far.......actually it made no sense to me why Allison had anything to do with this. If anybody else has seen this show and can enlighten me .......please do.......lol!

I believe that the show's intention was to disturb and confuse you, eventually lowering the level of play that you are capable of until you have to give yourself the 7 & the snap just to find your way to the pot, er, toilet...

Ah, you had too much to drink buddy.
4 am on ESPN? That's usually reserved for bass fishing or two white boxers going at it for four rounds.:D
Just what I need to see. More colliding spheres physics.
Hell, I asked Efren one time how he compensated for deflection.
He had no clue what deflection was.
Seriously though, I think I need to get a hold of Matthews Diamond system video. I have no clue after 3 rails.
But, late at night when I can't bang balls anymore on my, I shoot the cueball to the rail/rails and see what the hell happens.
It's helped a little.
Next time you are up at 4 am, get your VCR ready, will you?
Who knows, you might catch some of Gerry Cooney's classic bouts.

Ha Ha Joe!............I am a online Poker junkie! The show was the dumbest thing I have seen in awhile. It was a show on physics and pool. Which I understand is a part of it, but not the crap they showed. They were showing some odd things!
