how do you prepare yourself before a match?

like what the topic says...how?
me...since before going to my favorite pool hall...i usually come from my college, which is just beside that hall, fresh from the classroom...since there are players there waiting for me already...i have no time to prepare myself for the game...my game gets going better on the third or 4th game usually...

I stop drinking Long Island Iced Teas and Jagermeister and limit myself only to beer (and some occasional Tequila).
 
When I first walk into a pool hall or bar to play pool...I don't rush into a game, I find a seat, get a coca~cola, get relaxed and into the "aroma" of the room and the pool scene, then I put my quarters up and am ready to rack em' and run em'! This pre-game mental physci takes about 10 minutes or watching a couple of games that others are playing.

I'm like a diesel engine...and I need a few games to warm up. So, I play and practice by myself for around 20 to 30 minutes...just to get the stroke going.

If i'm playing a tourney, sometimes a beer (just one... ) before i play loosens me up.

I NEVER jump into a game cold, I shoot around by myself for 15 to 20 minutes to get warmed up, relaxed, and comfortable with the surroundings. Then I grab a beer, take my MP3 player and listen to some of my favorite songs as loud as the thing will go to get me pumped up and ready to play...I dunna know...it works for me!
 
for me i just basically just grab a smoke, watch people play for a couple of minutes then i'm ready to practice. That's wut i do before a tournament. I like to watch first to see wuts going on and sometimes i just see a shot that i wanna do.....just some of the things/routine i do before a match.
 
I totally screwed up my last match in the area of mental preparedness and boy did it show, I lost the match for one thing. Sure the opponent was good, but by not being mentally prepared, I was not ready with my best game.

What I usually try to do is be relaxed the day of the match by listening to soothing music, playing with my dogs and that kind of thing. Just have fun and not have my mind on the match. I may loosen up my stroke a little but dont practice hard. I also say good things to myself about my game like 'i have a good stroke', i will be relaxed', that kind of thing and get relaxed before the match.

Still working on this. Making progress, far from perfect.

yeah i find that this game is all in the head, in's really a mental challenge, if you're not ready mentally then you're not ready at all. Every time you're in a shot and you think of something maybe having doubts and you shoot chances are you'll prolly miss. If you're confident enough both mentally and physically then the game would be easier than it is.
 
When I go to a tournament, I tell myself to focus everytime I have a shot. Of course I try to get in some practice 20 or 30 minutes before my first match. I also tell myself that I should play like I do in practice that it's about me against the table and not the opponent. You know, yada, yada, yada!!

I don't. When it is time to shoot, the balls go in, period. What's to prepare? I already know what to do. Don't miss.

I agree with halhoule. My best tournament was one where I approached every shot with an attitude that I couldn't miss and if I didn't miss it didn't matter who I was playing. This approach actually got me into a zone and I beat several of the top players in New England that day. Lesson - positive attitude, don't miss.
