My leauge is currently scoring by total number of games won/lost over the season. I'm not sure I really like this system as it takes much of the drama out of the competition. For instance we are about 4 weeks from the end of the season sitting in fourth place and are already aware that we have a very slim chance to none of actually winning as we are about 25 games behind the top team, being a team captain I have noted that my players are much less enthusiastic about playing or showing up, I can't say I really blame them as it kind of sucks to show up, pay your 7 bucks pretty much knowing the outcome of the season. At least one of the bottom teams dropped out half way through and I have to wonder if this was due in part to the scoring system. I mean we show up to play another team, we play 25 games and we like to call it a win or loss against that team but really it doesn't matter.
Last week there were two major upsets, my team took the number two team 14-11 and the third place team took the number one team by the same score but it doesn't really matter as all we did was keep those two teams close on games and the upsets kept us close to the third place team, I just feel that in a win/lose match scoring system two major upsets like that would make the leauge much more interesting for all involved. This is the second leauge I've played in, the first that I played in for 3 years was based on a simple win/loss match system, statistics were just that, statistics, they weren't the basis for who wins and who loses, the matches determined that.
Using a win/loss scoring system it would be interesting to go back and see who's on top, my team has lost very few matches this season and while statistically better I know that the first and second place team have lost at least as many as us if not more. Anyway after having played under two different systems I have to say that I'm not a fan of total win/loss leauge systems, no drama, towards the end of the season there is simply no reason to keep competeing other than a love of pool.
I'll finish out the season simply because I made a commitment but I'm really not to interested in continuing next season, I mean we have at least one guy we carried through the season, he's a blast to be around, he's commited, he has goten a win here or there when we needed it for a match (unfortunately matches don't count though it's a hard mentality to break), but statistically he sucks, under this system I wouldn't want to carry him on my team next season. Anyway I'll quit crying now but man I think this system of scoring sucks, to me half the excitement of pool is being able to come from the one loss side and stick it to someone, ug.
