Ok, Guys and girls just a question. How long have you had your current playing cue? and what made you change from your previous? Did you stay with the same maker, company etc and just upgrade?Or did you just decide the cue wasnt for you and changed? Ok thats more then a question :) Seems like me and my cue arent getting along right now and im trying to figure out what to do.Im going to play some tonight and see if maybe just a slump or if there really needs to be a change.Im going to start with a tip change first and go from there.Thought about investing in a diff tapered shaft if that doesnt work but, that money could go towards another cue.lol
Thanks

well, I had my first cue for about 2 months, it was a Viking with a wrap, and maybe I'm just weird, but I can't play with a cue with a wrap. Anyway, I got rid of that and got a Bob Frey sneaky pete. I kept it for about 3 years, then got another Bob Frey. I only made one upgrade, I got an ivory butt cap. I love my cue. It feels like an extension of my arm. I've had it for about 2 1/2 maybe 3 years now and I don't see myself playing with anything else.

I you really like the butt of your cue, then try replacing the shaft with a custom made one. You might really like that scenario.

I switched to a Falcon cue in October. I have played with many different cues over the past 4 years. Most of my cues were crap (like my game). I liked the feel of the Falcon. Game has improved (I lie, it's still crap)

Same "one of a kind" Schon for twelve years. Play mostly with the 12.75mm shaft. I also have five other Schon shafts from 13mm to 13.25mm. Same Schon break stick for at least ten years. Thanks Evan!

Aren't the stock tips on Schons made of water buffalo? I know that Evan sent me some of his stock tips and they seemed really hard like WB.

Spalding to McDermott to Schon Ltd to Scruggs to Custom

I have been through the evolution of pool cues. Looking back I can't believe I have had so many. The Spalding I had for all of a month because it was a $20 POS.

A friend had a purple McDermott so I went a bought a blue one. Played with it for 1 1/2 years and then a local poolhall was having a half off sale so I bought a Schon Ltd. Played with it for 6 months and then the repair shop lost my shaft as it was being retipped. They replaced it with a Predator Shaft which I had to get used to. Played with that for a year and didn't really like it. Another friend had a purpleheart Chudy sneaky so I did some research on here and contacted Tim Scruggs.

I played with my Scruggs prupleheart sneaky for 2 1/2 years and ran into a guy that I knew who said he was making custom cues. I told him what I wanted and he delivered beautifully. I have been playing with it now for 6 months.

After all of those cues I knew what I wanted out of the cue and what each could/could not do. It should be the natural progression. But people want to head to teh Southwest right off the bat...but hey if I had the money i might splurge again too.

My wife bought me a Viking production cue when we first met a couple of years ago, and I used it until about a year or so ago, when the shaft developed some cracks at the joint (from breaking?).

Was gonna just get a shaft, called billiardswarehouse and chatted with Greg Savoie. He told me that, instead of trying a predator (which everyone told me to try), I could use the same cash to get a plain jane Dominiak with a Dominator shaft. Got it, loved it, but it had a loose weight bolt so I sent it back and upgraded to a DW1008. Played with it for a while (8 months?), and liked it, and still do. I decided somewhere in that time that I want to really get serious about playing, learning everything I can, watching, practicing, etc. Ended up thinking about getting a break cue. Don Purdy had the Sledge, and I met up with him in December and bought it. I mentioned that I really liked the feel of Scruggs' cues (at least those a friend let me try). He found a beauty for me right away, and I broke a big chunk off my savings to get it. Don't regret it, except when I'm shooting really badly and I'm that asshole who can't play but has an overpriced cue, haha. But when I'm relaxed and enjoying it, man -- what a cue.

Still have my Dominiak, and will probably keep it unless a friend buys it. Great cues for little money, as far as playability. Hits 5000% differently than the Scruggs, though...

Toby's Scruggs

Toby, I would be happy to have the Scruggs back if you change your mind. Would look real good in my personal collection. I will take the whole package back. Give ya all your money back. Then I would get a great deal too. I am always looking for a great deal, ya know. So I can pass it on to good people like you. ;)

kokopuffs,

One by one, each of my shafts have been changed over to medium / soft Moori layered tips. I believe I have one shaft that may have an original. I have so much trouble concentrating on the game (ADD) that tip materials became a distraction. Once I found one that worked (thanks Guido) I stuck with it.

Oh, no, Don, I won't be changing my mind... haha.

I may be the equivalent of a monkey with a Stradivarius on some days, but I'm loving it!

Started out with a POS orchid for about 2 months, then to a viking which played pretty well for about 3-4 months (w/a J&j break/jump which totally sucked!). THEN..I splurged and bought a Chris Nitti and it hits a ton a very consistent...love it. After 6 months with that one, I wanted a sneaky pete so I bought this b-e-a-U-tiful Stacey cocobolo SP that turned out to play only OK, so I traded that one for a scruggs purpleheart SP at the DCC and I mainly play with the scruggs now......absolutely awesome cue.....hits nice and stiff like I like 'em. I also bought an Olivier SP at the DCC (for only 150!) and it hits 'em great as well. As you can see, I just can't stop buyin' cues!
I occasionally pull out the nitti and play with it because I love it....I will keep it and the scruggs forever...I could part with all the others(which I still have).
PEACE
David

I own a very early Ernie Martinez cue, made when he first started cuemaking at Showcase Billiards. Plays and hits great. It has 6 veneered BEM points, Cocobola forearm and a metric pin. I'd consider trading only for an original Balabushka and nothing less!

I was playing with a Pechauer and loved it but it was a little too short for me. I started a thread asking people on the board who they would recommend as a good cue-maker. Many of them suggested Dave Jacoby so I started talking to him and I liked what I heard and so I ordered one. He custom made it for me at a great price. I've been playing with it now for almost a year and I love it!

Same here i started off with a grafite stick which lasted me about 2 weeks before i found someone selling a lucasi. bought the lucasi used it for about 2 months then my bday was coming up so i bought a dominiak 1009 from Zim. This was last june i got the cue in july and probably will never usea different cue. I am thinking about getting a dw1001 or if i can find a dw1003 or maybe even a plain jane cue. the price on his cues are ridiculously low and 90% are limited editon. I also spoke with greg from billiardwarehouse.com to see if he had any 1003's and he said no but he has a 1001. my tax return cant come soon enough. By far dominiak is the best cue i have shot with and i have shot with many custom cues.

Played with a Star Cue made on Miami Beach from '81 to '2000. Somewhere along the line I owned about 35 cues looking for the "hit" including JossWest's, SouthWest's, Szamboti's {including a Ivory Jointed Gus}, several Searings and OMENS. Since 2000 I havent found a cue that hit as good as that old Sneaky Pete....

I started out with a cheap 90 dollar cue. I had that for about 3 years. Then I got a Mali. I've had it for about 6 months. It plays ok. I'm trying to get some money together for a custom cue.

My first cue was a green Mali that I bought back in college in '93 for $100. Had that for a couple of years before I left it in my friends car. He move the next day. Never got it back, stopped playing pool. Got the bug again in '99, bought another Mali from Hawley's I think, or was it BilliardWarehouse? Well anyway, I didn't know much about pool, but I knew Mali. Got bored it with after about a year, then I bought a Lucasi. WHAT A HIT! To bad I lost it somewhere, was a Buddy Hall model too, super pissed. Still can't find it. Then I ordered a limited edition Lucasi, that got shipped from UPS broke, that hurt. So in an act of frustration, I bought 2 Lucasi cues figuring lightning couldn't strike twice, and it didn't. Then I started playing league pool, getting serious. I wanted to change my game from power to finesse so I sold my Lucasi's and bought a southwest clone to get used to how that style of cue plays. Night and Day difference. Been playing with that for about 18 months. I have a Viattorre cue on order and may pick up another one this week. My break cue is my fav cue, I may never ger rid of it.

Started with a Dufferin dot cue, but the shaft was too skinny. Changed to a plain Brunswick cue with a 13mm shaft. Bought a graphite cuetec, but didn't like playing with it so it became a breaker. After a couple years the Brunswick got dropped on its pin and was no longer straight, so I stepped up and bought a Joss east with a linen wrap. Lovingly used it for 8 years. Just recently bought a customized Pechauer. All ebony and ivory with a predator shaft and ivory joint. Love the look of the cue, but it will take a while to get used to the different feel. I changed for two reasons: I wanted to learn how to play with a predator shaft, and I also wanted a more elaborately decorated cue. Figured I'd do both at the same time. No sense in relearning a cue more often than necessary.

cheers,
jer9ball

Here's my story:
I stared with a McDermott D6. The butt was a little warp but the cue was free. After a year or so, bought a Meucci and used it for a couple of years. Sold the Meucci to a buddy and bought a Joss N4 in 1991 and later a Heubler sneaky pete as a back up. Used the Joss til 1997. Quit playing altogether (big mistake!!). Started playing again in early 2002. Sold the Joss & Heubler and bought a Schon LTD652. Used it for a month or so, didnt like it, sold it and bought a Coker custom cue. I liked that cue at first (new cue syndrome) but after 2 months sold it and bought a Mike Bender sneaky pete. Loved it so much, I bought another Bender and have been using it ever since. Now I have 5 Bender cues plus others in my collection.
