How many Pool ROOMs in the USA?

In the 1940s and 50s there were 1500 pool rooms in New York City.

That figure isn't entirely accurate. What was defined as a poolroom in the 40's is not necessarily what you would define as a poolroom today. I live in New York City and when I saw that figure, I was completely floored. That's pretty much the equivelant of a poolroom at every corner throughout the city which would be just about impossible so I did a little research.

Back then, any establishment that had a pooltable was considered a poolroom. Considering that there are approximately 300 bars in Manhattan that fit that requirement, I'd say we're still doing alright. No, it's not quite the same as it was back then when barber shops had pooltables BUT, we still have a number of social clubs, cafes and laundromats that sport a coin-op.
