how much warp is ok?

Hi everyone
I'd like some opinions on this. I recently noticed a shaft from one of my McDermott cues has a slight warp to it, but it's a small warp and I wonder if it's worth worrying about. When rolling the shaft, the light between the shaft and table will vary about 1/8 of an inch. It doesn't seem like much but it is noticeable. It it worth sending it back to McDermott for replacement, or is this just nitpicking? How much of a warp is acceptable?

IMO its being nitpicky. The shaft on my fury had warped to a point where it was a "s" shape and wasnt just a slight curve either. I still played fine with that cue until a year later when i got my sneaky pete. 1/8 inch isnt that bad but if your really THAT uncomfortable with it then send it in. If you dont even feel it when you stroke then dont waste your time.

slight warping in the shaft and butt should not affect play but do affect the future value of "collectable" cues or any cue for that matter. i still play with my old schon R series cue (r-14) from time to time and the but has a slight warp and the shafts had slight "taper" warps also. i won many tourneys with this cue and still play well with it the same as my Josey cue.

If in fact it is 1/8" warped, that is a big warp. That 1/8 in thousands is .125. A few thousands is acceptable but that's a banana. It can affect play as well, little to none as far as feel but where you strike the c/b not to mention playing games with your eyes in alignment.

Taper wobble seems to be a relatively new saying around here. Meaning is not perfect but it's ok. Well guess what folks, shafts have had tapers for over a 100 years. I call a warp for what it is, it's a warp. Meaning it does not run concentric with the centerline axis. When anything is machined new, it's run out is near perfect, meaning 0. Of course wood moves with temperature and humidity changes, so expecting a shaft to be perfect is a little far fetched.

I suspect your shaft is not .125 out but even 1/4 of that number is too far out. McDermott I believe warrantys shafts for warps. I'd call first, if possible before hand someone should run this on a lathe with a dial indicator, that will tell you how bad the warp is in thousands so you can tell them.

I agree that 1/8 inch is pretty substantial. McDermott does have a lifetime warrany against warpage, so if it affects your playability, then by all means give Jayme at McDermott a call. I am sure he'll take care of your problem. Even if it is a slight bend and doesn't affect actual playability, I often wonder how it affects you psychologically, knowing its there, etc.

Good luck.
