Is there anyway to make sure a shaft is from a certain builder? I have not seen anything special about a shaft other than ring work that might match the but. Thanks for any info.

Sometimes, and it depends on the builder. For example, other than the obvious marking like JOSS or Schon written on the collars of the shafts, some makers use special pilots or inserts in their shafts. Schon shafts have a larger than average pilot on the shaft, Heubler uses a nylon insert in his shafts, some makers like McDaniel tend to use really thin silver rings on his shafts/cues. However, a lot of the time you can't tell. You'd be hard to pressed to find a difference between an old Joss shaft with a plain black collar and a Scruggs shaft with the same collar - both have the same thread and pilot size. Same with shafts that don't have joint collars - it's next to impossible to identify the maker. Hope this helps.
