How to properly design a cue?

Hi guys,

Sometime soon I would like to design a cue to be made for me. Should I figure out what I want and then submit the ideas to different cuemakers or should I pick a cuemaker and have him help me with the design?

Regarding inlays, how difficult is it to make a new design? I wanted to have some inlays done to match a tattoo on my wrist but was told it would be too difficult. I've since thought about a cue with Gemini ( horoscope sign ) influenced inlays or ones matching the symbol of the club I work at.

I'm in the very early stages of trying to design a cue that's all me. I would appreciate any advice from cuemakers on how to properly approach this issue.

Thanks

Better pick a cuemaker and let him help you out.
As for inlays.check or browse throught the cuemakers site and see if his designs match yours. That will give you an idea of what he could do with inlays.
Goodluck and have fun with your quest

how much

As for your inlay designs the question is how much do you want to spend. There are several cuemakers that will do custom one of a kind inlays, But you will pay for it. They usally charge from $50 to $100 per hour for custom designs. Some have a tier'd pricing structure for custom designs. These prices are what I have seen personally from people I have worked with, I don't know what the big name guys charge.
I would suggest you attend a big show like the super billiard expo and talk to the cuemakers there. Not that you can't do it by phone but I like to discuss custom cues in person. Just my 2 cents, Hope it helps. :p

Post photos of your designs, the tattoo, your club's logo and the Gemini illustration that you prefer. Are you just going to use one that is doable or do you need a composition that'll blend the 3 in 1 illustration? Maybe if you post them here our resident cuemakers can give you some advise.

Bandido, here is an image of the club symbol. The zodiac symbol for gemini looks like the roman numeral for 2, sometimes with a curve in the vertical bars and sometimes in the horizontal. I guess I was hoping for something a little more cool with that, I'll keep looking.

That inlay would not be very hard to do. What would you want for forearm designs if any?

I'm thinking that I want points (8?) with veneers ( no floating points ). I don't yet know about inlays in the forearm. I may go with the club symbol or keep looking for a cool gemini symbol. My wife is convinced that I'm of Viking ancestry, so maybe some Viking or Norse runes.

In alot of ways this cue will probably be of classic design, I'm just hoping to figure out some nice inlays to make it mine. A combination of really exotic woods and colors is not out of the question either. Definitely gotta have nice decorative rings too.

I appreciate all the help thus far. Since whatever I finally come up with is probably gonna cost me, I'm taking my time. Hopefully, I'll be ready to order sometime in '05.

BTW, here are a few designs I find interesting. 1st is an Omen cue, 2nd & 3rd are Murray Tucker's, I really like the look & colors of the bottom cue, and 4th is a Viattorre, I like the wood ( tulip ) and those inlays.
