How to take off the gloss or varnish on the shaft?

Hey I was just wondering if anyone here knows how to safely take the varnish or glossy finish off the shafts of cues. My hands sweat enough while I play that when mixed with chalk my Lucasi becomes very difficult to stroke. I have taken some cue smoothing sandpaper to the shaft and that has worked somewhat well but I still have problems with the glossy finish. The sandpaper I used seems to have pushed some of the glossy finish into the wood and thus I still have problems.

Also, does anyone know if Predator shafts have a glossy finish on the shaft? Or do they have an open wood pore shaft? I can't imagine why anyone would knowingly buy cues that have a glossy sealer on the shaft that gets sticky after a couple racks.

That's not varnish on the shaft. That's usually how a finsihed shaft should be, glossy and smooth. It can be achieved without putting anything on it.

Besides it's done to seal the pores of the shaft wood so it won't be affected by elements, humidity etc.

If you use a shaft that is unfinished or not burnished, your sweat could make the shaft dirty and it being not sealed will not last long enough. Expect it to be crooked sooner than normal.

But if that's what you need to enjoy the game, go ahead.

hmm, why do some cue makers not have these finishes then? i have shot with viking, joss, meucci, and orchid and all of these cues felt slightly grainy (as if i was actually shooting with a cue made of wood). this lucasi cue has a finish on the shaft almost like the high gloss of the butt. its also feels like the same type of gloss/finish that is on the 3-4 inches closest to the joint of the Joss, Meucci and Viking shafts.

If you have that finish like the one near the joint that could be cumbersome. Better have it sanded while it's spinning on a lathe. You could start with 400 grit then gradually go up. Be sure to burnish it after
