I had an epiphany

The setup:
Today I had an important early morning meeting at work with my boss. I knew I couldn't be late. I don't have an alarm clock, and have trained myself to wake up on time. Without fail, I ususally wake-up a few minutes before my planned wake-up time.

The epiphany:
I had a dream that someone dropped some money right in front of me. Instead of giving it back to them, I picked it up for myself. I knew this was wrong and had an uncomfortable feeling. I walked out of the store where this happened into the parking lot. Before I get to my car a security guard aproaches me. He was going to arrest me when he asked, "what do you want to tell your boss?"

This triggered me to wake-up immediately because of the importance I placed on this meeting the night before.

The moral of the story:
It was my subconscious controling my conscious mind and body.

What does this have to do with pool?

We have talked in other posts about having a positive attitude, meditation and hypotnotism. These are tools for controling are subconscious. It is only when we are letting are left and right brain work together that we get in dead stroke. The zone!

Why am I writing this?

To enlighted the non-believers in hypnotism and positive thinking. This event is something I think most, if not all, people have experienced in life. This is a tangable experience from the conscious and subconscious parts of the mind. The mind is a powerful thing. There will still be some skeptics who think this is zen budda bull, but that is there problem.

Ask yourself a few questions like:

Are the most successful people you know optimists?
Have you ever knew you were going to miss a shot and did?
Have you ever consentrated so hard to make the imposible shot and did?
Have you ever been in dead stroke, if so how did you get there? Did your subconscious take over?
Do you want to surround yourself with positive or negative people?

Just some food for thought.

Check out the book The Inner Game of Tennis if you have not already done so. It's all about training the mind to get in to the Zone. The Zone basically being where your concious mind stfu and lets your subconcious mind do the work.

You know the subconcious mind. It's the part of you that performs millions of calculations ever second. The part of me that is typing this at 70 wpm without error (?). The part of you that learnt to run, walk and jump without ever being interupted by the concious or ego mind.

Damn, I sound like a shrink ;-)

A wquick addition to tyhat. I'm a fairly average player. Occasional break and run ut but not too often. The day after reading this book I went to my local hall. Broke, dished and then I missed a ball. 5 racks later. I had 4 break and runs for the first time in my life. Funny thing was, I was so focussed I didn't even realise what I had achieved until I missed the ball in the 5th!!

Another great source of information on the subconscious mind is the book "The Pleasures of Small Motions."
A question asked in this book (not an exact quote) is have you ever knocked a glass off of the table, and caught it before it hit the ground without thinking? Endless physical information was needed to catch the glass, the distance it was from your hand, how fast it was moving, how fast your hand needed to move to compensate. If one were to try to think of all these things, the glass would be shattered on the floor.

The main point is that the subconscious mind can handle a much wider amout of information than that of the conscious, at a more rapid pace. The more that you can put into your subconscious mind, the more circuits you litteraly create in your brain by repetition (DRILLS, the deadly word) the better you will be able to instantly recognize and act on patterns on the pool table.
 
A good way to get you left and right brain to work together is to practice playing left and right handed.
 
When a person lies, he usually look up to his left. When a person tries to remember something he has forgotten, he usually look up to his right.
 
:).. If you really sit down and think about it your game is more than likely almost 60-70% mental. If you drill and drill and drill and drill, eventually it will be more than second nature, it will be something that you just know how to do. Until you achieve that kind of mental preparation then you will have alot of frustration time :D. But in the end it's more than worth it.

How does that work for someone who's cross-eyed?
 
I agree with what jason is saying as far as making yourself wake up, i think i can do that sometimes, but has it helped my pool game? I dunno, I don't think they are one in the same, either you have the game or you don't, now if you have the game but not the mental game, maybe it would help you a lil, you just have to learn how to relax and think positive.

And for someone to read the inner game of tennis and to go out and break an run a bunch of games right afterwords, doesn't add up, one of the things from the book that i remember the most is about going up to someone who's playing really well and getting them to think about what exactly it is that they are doing to play so well, which gets them "thinking" and they will not be able to play at all. But when I do play well i play without thinking almost, or shall i say thinking about anything other than pool, maybe it's about mental efficiency i guess.

Hmm. I always look up to the left when I am trying to remember something. I wonder if that means I am lying to myself?!

I have read that book. It is definitely required reading. Highly recommended.

Johnson,

It's not about running more racks than anyone in the world, its about performing at an individuals peak performance at a perticular time.

Then we use our conscious mind to learn new things and practice them to become part of our subconscious.

I agree there were parts of the book, the inner game of tennis, that aren't perfect, but over all it is a great book.
