I Need Help Identifying an 80's Gold-Letter Joss Model & Dating a Scruggs Sneaky Pete

Hello all,

I'm looking for some more details on two cues that I own and really love; the first is an early-to-mid 80's gold-letter Joss, and the second is a venerable Tim Scruggs sneaky pete.

First up, here are a couple pics of the Joss. If anyone knows the model number, and timeline of when Joss made this cue, please respond with that information:

The last photo above shows a Joss Model 24 (top), and the unidentified model (bottom), which I'm thinking may be from the late 80's, but I'm not certain. The model 24 was from the early to mid 80's, but I'm hoping someone knows the model number and approximate date in which the cue in the bottom of the picture, was made? If I were to email Joss, they would say they could make me a cue like whatever vintage Joss I send them a picture of, but they won't elaborate on any information about their previously made cues. Trust me, I've already tried this!

Now, on to the Scruggs. I would like to know what year Tim Scruggs first started making Sneaky Pete models? Here's a pics showing an early stamping of the TS logo. Which years were these earliest logos--which had no ink within the letters, just a stamping into plain wood--made?

Now here's a shot that shows the original Scrugg's shaft collar:

Am I correct in that the Scruggs shafts have wood incorporated into the base of the pilot, and that this is one of the identifying traits?

Is another identifying trait of Scruggs cues, the fact that the top of their brass pilots have a rolled edge, as seen in the above pic?

In closing, thanks for the help identifying model of the Joss, and the approximate date of its manufacture. (e.g. late 80's, 1990, etc.), and for filling me in on the Scruggs Sneaky Pete, with regard to when the first Scruggs SP's were made, and what timeline represents cues such as the one pictured, having the first or earliest "TS" logo stamping, with no ink or woodburning of the letters, but rather just an impression of the letters in plain wood?

Regards,

Calling on Joss and Tim Scruggs Experts?

Bowiebill, Thanks for your reply! I don't believe that the stamping was ever black. I have seen a handful of other Scruggs Sneaky Pete cues with the same stamping. Not only is the stamping smaller than Scruggs cues that followed it, but the letters are impressioned into bare wood. I was told by the previous owner of this cue, that it was a very early, or in his words, "the first" sneaky pete logo stamping.

I believe you may be right in your estimation that the cue is from the 80's, but I'm thinking that it is one of the early ones made while Bob Frey was with the company, sometime between the early 80's and when he left in 1984? From what I understand, when the company started in 1978, there were no TS logos put on the cues. I'm not sure when they started, but I've heard they went from engraving to pantograph. I think I have an engraved stamping, though I'm not certain. I'm hoping some Tim Scruggs experts (Nick Serdula, etc.) will educate me here. Also, I wonder if I'm right in thinking my Joss cue is from the late 80's. Who's to say it's not from the early 80's, if that's when the gold-letter Joss cues were first introduced?

Thanks guys,

Joss & Scruggs Info. (Is There Anybody Out There?)

Damn, I feel like a black sheep here? I can't believe only one person has lent a hand to help identify the age of an old Scruggs Sneaky, and answer some questions about them. (Thanks, Bowiebill!) Some questions remain unanswered, such as: 1. What year did Scruggs first start making sneaky petes? 2. For how long did the first stampings last? (TS impressioned into bare wood, with no ink or dark color, such as pictured). I finally own a TS Sneaky Pete after 20 years of reading about them and wanting to seek out a nice one. I see what the hype is all about. The cue plays amazing! I'd also like to know what model the gold-letter Joss is, and from what era? Perhaps nobody has seen one like it, with 4-diamond abolone inlays in the butt? Thanks for your replies! Regards, Glen (strum4u)

Joss cue info,

i cant see the collar of the JOSS cue, if you are saying it is the Gold JOSS, without the custom name below the JOSS in gold, you are looking at years of 1988 to 1991 (early) after april 1991, Joss changed to the JOSS Custom in gold on the shaft and butt collars.

If the JOSS is in White then you are looking at 1980 to 1982 (late)

In 1983 JOSS started putting the JOSS and the Year, JOSS 1983, or JOSS 1984 up to JOSS 1987. Some of these had JOSS on the Shaft collar some only had a black Collar.

Hope this helps a bit

Mike,

Thanks for this information, concerning Joss cues. The cue in which I'm trying to date has faded gold lettering that simply says "Joss," without the word "Custom." It is identical to the model 24 cue, which I thought was from the early 80's, but I guess I was wrong about that, as the cue would have had white lettering. Hence, both of the cues must be from 1988 to 1991, correct?.

I'll attach another pic of the model 24's logo, which, unlike the other Joss, is in good condition. This way you can see the joint collar of what I'm referring to.

It's great to learn something I didn't know, regarding the chronology of Joss logos, including both the color of the silkscreened or handpainted? "Joss" letters that spell the company's namesake, and stampings that were made into the stainless joints.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply to my post!

Great information. Recently on AZB, there was a 1982 Joss with a date. Perhaps they started experimenting with the dated logo a year earlier.
