I would like some opinions on a lathe

I have been wanting to tinker with cues for a wile as a hobby and found an old South Bend (50's vintage). I measured the bed and its probably only 30 inch with the sharp fitting in the tailstock. With the drill style chuck it is probably too short. Any thoughts? Anything else I need to look for? All help is greatly appreciated.
 
IMHO 36" is minimum, 40" or more is optimum. Even on a 36" some lathes don't have 30" of carriage travel. You must have at least 30" between centers with enough carriage travel to cover the full 30".
