Insert Problem

I had a customer bring me a shaft were the insert backed out about 3/8's of an inch. I took the shaft home, backed the rest of the insert out(quite easily), only to find out the insert was broken inside, and most of the outside threads still remain in the shaft.

I have 5/16-18 inserts, but not the exact ones that viking uses. I think I can modify one to fit.

My questions are:

What is the best way to fix this?(I was thinking to drill it out, bore, plug, and start from scratch)

Should I have him send it back to Viking?

I have contacted Viking, and they will not sell me an original insert.

Any help will be appreciated

I think you need to ask the customer, if it was me I'd tell you to do whatever you can to make it work, drill it, bore it, etc. but some people want things to be returned to the same way they were originally done by the factory whether or not your repair is as good or better than the original way. Hope this makes sense :D

Removing remainder of insert

Without seeing it, it's hard to say. You may be able to use and easy-out (screw extractor) to remove the remaining portion of the insert. If not boring and plugging may be the only solution.

As far as a replacement, I don't know what special type insert Viking uses. If the pin is a standard 5/16-18, I don't know why a standard insert wouldn't work as a replacement.

I will see the customer tonight, and talk it over with them.

As far as the insert goes, the insert is standard, but the pilot is very thin, so I would have to turn down the pilot on my current insert. It also appears that the external thread is a 10 t.p.i., possibly 14? It's hard to tell because only 1.5 threads came out. The inserts I have are 20, and as far as I know I can only get 14, and 20t.p.i..

I think i'm going to suggest sending it to Viking, and I'll take it from there.
