I got my 250 brass inserts today. I cut off bad 1 inch doewls approx 5 inches long. I put in 33 inserts for practice. I think im ready for the real thing now. I have one question. if i have an insert that is 1.030 how deep do most cue makers drill and tap. I have two thoughts. What about an "air pocket" which i think is not desired? What about Glue relief space. Just wondering what a typical drill and tap deth are? And is 5 minute appoxy ok to use.
 
I keep my depth pretty close to actual, I still grind a channel on two sides of the insert to work as a lock.

250 inserts would last me a lifetime and 1/2 another lifetime...

Same here...LOLz...I drill to just sit the insert all the way in and use 2 ton 'PowerPoxy'....

I all ready have a lot of work lined up. I hope to go thuough these inserts in the next 2 months. Within the next few weeks I will have 340 5/8x5/8 26 ply laminates to glue up, to make 85 shafts. If all goes well i will have more. I guess its hard to pass up free labor.
 
Ok, I am confused. You will have 5/8" x 5/8" quares? Min. for shaft wood is a full 1" x 1". and 29 to 30" long. If you intend on installing the inserts within the next 2 months, I need to know what your secret is. If I did that to all my shafts they would warp for sure. By the way I was wondering, bubsbug, how did you get that many inserts and what size are they.

See if this clears things up for you. the 5/8 squared boards come already planed and sanded. All I do is glue the 26 ply laminates with the grain running in this direction. Then turn to profile. This creates pie shapes laminates with grain opposing in all directions. The laminates are going nowhere. Warping is practicaly non exsisant. As far as insert, all different kinds, for all different cues.

One 4x8 sheet provides approx 170 5/8x5/8 squares. 4 squares to one shaft. approx 42 shafts. Cost of wood per sheet $1520 + shipping.
 
So Bubsbug, you are looking at $36 to $40 a shaft. Interesting idea. Shaft should have same deflextion in all directions. Can you tell me who is your source for the laminate sheets? Sounds like you will need alot of wood clamps. I would guess that you will need 15 to 20 clamps per shaft at a min. Please post pictures of your work.

Just 3 clamp jigs. Turn on air compressor, set regulator at 80 psi and walk away for 2 hrs.

It is! I bought his equiptment, and he turned me on to everything I needed to know. From how to, to where to get the wood, and even other contacts.

So I am guessing you will be selling the shafts for $37 each right?

Bubs won't sell it that high, he isn't a thief. He doesn't believe in raping the customer. Heck, if it only costs him $36 to $40, like Jim said...sell it for $37 to $41. Maybe $50 if he gets strapped for money. But $200? that is like over 4 times the cost!!!! That would be like selling a piece of equipment for $2000 when the raw material cost is like $400....

I guess with all this being said when can I expect all of the cuemakers here start placing orders.
 
I would be interested after trying a sample or two. I can only guess at the work involved at making one of those. You would have to plane every side of each square befor glue up. Then you could only glue up two quares at a time since your clamp only works in one direction. Correct? Then take the two double squares (rectangle) and glue those up. This all needs to be done befor you can even take a pass on them. Just wondering at what stage you are going to sell them? Will they be cones or tapers, or just dowls? The amount of work involved will most likely double the price. I hope you will keep us posted on the progress.
