Hello all just bought my pool table and am trying to figure out the right way to play this game. I have bought Byrne's new standard book of pool and billiards. Wow I didn't realize that just a proper grip and bridge could make shooting so much easier. Anyway I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good training video for a novice. I saw a Jimmy Reid videos 1) the art of 8 ball 2) no time for negative 3) and a cd on ebay for 40.00 but I don't no if it's worth the money. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

There are at two tapes with Jim Rempe and Loree Jon Jones called Pool School. I thought they did a pretty good job of making the instruction clear, concise and very understandable for people at almost every level.

Have fun with your new table!

I have not seen Reid's tapes, but have heard positive remarks on them. If you liked Byrne's book, he has tapes, too. The first one is pretty basic, but if you are a beginner, that is good. His "Power Pool Workout" tape is very good, IMO. I like Tom Rossmans tapes on banking. Grady Mathews has several tapes that are good, but are sometimes specialized (like for one pocket). Burt Kinister has lots of tapes. I'm not a Burt fan, but his 60 minute workout is pretty good. I know you asked about videos but here are some more books I have that I like: Capelle's books "Play your best (pool, 9 ball, 14.1) are very good. There is a book on Tennis by Tim Galwey called "The Inner Game of Tennis" that is very good for the mental side of the game. He also has one on Golf. Either one is good. "The Pleasure of Small Motions" by Francher is also a good book. This should keep you in study material for a few years.

the ljj and rempe videos were a promotion from meucci originals in the late 80's, early 90's. there were three tapes in the series, pool school, power pool and trick shots. of all of the videos i have ever seen, these are by far the best in order for a novice player to get started with. unfortunately, i lent my set to somebody 15 years ago and haven't seen them since. i wish i still had the power pool and trick shots video. rempe does a very in depth lesson on aiming and deflection on the power pool video that i think would benefit players of all levels, and david howard does an amazing draw shot in the trick shots video that i have never seen duplicated by anyone. i saw them for sale online, but they wanted 40/piece for them which is a little high in my book. i missed a set on ebay a while ago, and haven't seen them since. if anyone knows of any available, please post it up.

Get Byrne's Vol 1 and vol 2 tapes and Ray Martin's book "99 Critical Shots".

That should keep you busy for the next year or two.

Just remember that owning the books and videos will do you absolutely no good - unless you apply yourself and study them.
