Pool is not about money! It is about striving to be the best, the World Champion, or an APA 4. What ever your GOAL is pool is the only sport in the world where you are only limited by your skills and ability.
In hockey, baseball, football, soccer, volley ball, tennis, and golf this just does not happen, you have to be picked by a coach/manager or qualify, you cannot just pay your money and play in the PGA's US Open beside Tiger Woods, but you can show up to pool's US Open and play with Johnny Archer.
That is why pool is the greatest sport in the world and will continue to be so, MONEY BE DAMNNED!!!
