CONVERGENCE 8-BALL

I was playing pool a couple of days ago with my friends in our favorite pool hall, here in the philippines there are 2 ways to play pool in most pool halls, either you pay per game you play (the loser pays), or you pay per hour you rent a table.
Well, since they are close friends of mine, I told them to play per hour so we get to pay equally. We played for an hour and a half, luckily, me and my cue are working very well that i wasnt defeated in any game we played, 8-ball, 9-ball, and 15-ball rotation. they told me i was unbelievable, especially when i broke and ran-out a rack of 8-ball and 9-ball. i told them i jsut felt really good because i passed all my subjects (it was finals week). then one of my friends (the best player among us, well, next to me) asked me if i would play him per game (losers pay). so i answered yes and asked what game he wanted to play, he said 15-ball rotation (being the most popular game here).
so the game began, i broke, ran 4 balls, his turn. He ran 2 balls, my turn. Seeing a very wide open table, i ran 5 balls, then i missed the 12-ball (my last ball btw) for some reason, it was a very easy shot (must be overconfidence), there were 4 balls left and he took all of em, i lost. i was so disappointed with my loss that i asked for another game, same game. My rhythm was lost, i couldnt get proper control of the cb, and eventually lost again.
I thought it was enough because i am losing.

Sorry for the long post, its just the introduction...:D I thought of the games we played, especially those 2 last games where i pocketed 9 or 8 balls already and i lost. I realized the rotation game was just unfair...you get to pocket 8-10 of 15 balls and you may still lose (depending on the balls you pocketed). So I thought and planned on making 8-ball as a local favorite in my place that I wouldnt play anybody if the game isnt 8-ball so they would realize how good that game is. Well, i thought the game is very easy because you really dont need good cb control on every shot compared to 9-ball and 15-ball rotation games, but if you have the edge, you will really win.

So i thought if there is such a game as 8-ball rotation game, where you should pocket your balls in ascending order if your balls are solids and descending order if your balls are stripes?
This way, you really should have good pocketing and cb control skills to win.
I think this should be the game to determine real champions, not 9-ball.
Is there already one? I dont want to be inventing rules here in our place and eventually someone will come to my face who has a rule book and tell me im stirring up...:D

Thanks!

I have given that spot before, Locki. I had to do my balls in ascending order. Tough!

yeah its real tough as if you broke, chose either solids or stripes, you have to maneuver around at least 14 balls to get to your second ball. real tough. i wonder how efren or busty would play this game.

I would first position my balls near the pockets... at the same time ensure that my opponent does not have an easy shot....

once you see a runout..go for it !!!..otherwise....duck

An old game called"Mr and Mrs" has been around for lotsa years.
Haven't seen it in last 20 years though...
THe man usually being a better player had to shoot the balls of his group playing the balls in rotation while the woman could shoot her balls in any manner.

i think the man has to shoot both of the woman's balls at the same time with his stick while the woman chalks the man's stick and shoot the balls of the man at the same time??!!
hehehe, anyway, i think that game should be between a man and a woman, just like the name of the game.
8-ball rotation is for equal players who wish to determine which one has a better edge...
i dunno if such a game really exists in the rule book, if there is none, kindly inform me...so i can make rules for myself...;)

i believe somebody already suggested the game of 8-ball to be played in rotation (i just can't remember who). in my opinion, this should be the game which should be played by the pros. in other games, such as 9-ball or rotation, you can win the game even if your opponent pockets more balls than you. 8-ball in itself would be very easy for the pros so to make it a game which would be very challenging to them, shoot the balls (stripes or solids) in rotation. in addition to that, forget about the ball-in-hand rule. let the players shoot the spot shot.

yeah...see now? its a really good game, little hard on the player thus run-out numbers would decrease...

we've played a game around here that's similar to that, "it's called "RACEto the EIGHT".

After the Break Shot, if something is made, that determines the Breaker's set of balls. IF stripes were made, the player starts at the high numbered stripe ball. If a solid is made, the player starts a lowest numbered solid ball.

Great game for two good players... not much fun for ball bamgers.

Short Rack 8 Ball is a great game. A good player, with a good Break Shot, can string 4 or 5 or more games together. It's a real ballsy money game...

then you stick with the 8-ball rule that the other player would get to choose which ball he wants, solid or stripe. if he wishes to pocket solid balls, you must pocket the lowest ball up to the 8-ball. if he wishes to pocket striped balls, he must pocket the highest ball first, down to the 8-ball, that's how i tell people about my *new* game...:D
if you have no shot on your next ball, its either you hit it in anyway possible (jump shots allowed) and a ball must hit the rail or you can make your opponent take a spot shot.
i only wish a lot of people would realize the potential of this game in our place.

8-ball

There is a game like you describe, it's called convergence 8-ball .You shoot the balls 1 thru 7 in order and your opponent shoots the 15 thru 9 in descending order. B

really?
could you tell me the rules please?
like if you dont have a shot, could you make your opponent take a spot? or if a player makes a bad shot, would it be ball in hand for the next player or its either he shoots it or he spots it?

8-ball

Locki,

Go to www.ogreen.com>billiard links > index c and it's in there. The one I read about was simpler but I don't remember where I read it. You can always create your own version of it though. I've never played it but it seems like it might be a good challenge. B
