Ivory tusks

What do you look for when buying ivory by the tusk? I may have the opportunity to buy 2 tusks for $300, but I have no idea what is good, and what is not. The ad says antique ivory tusks.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Rodney

Unless you know Ivory first hand it is hard to tell you how to decide if the tusks are worth buying. If the pair weigh over a pound a piece they are good for collecting at that price. How much do they weigh and are they real is the two things you need to determine. You can heat up a pin red hot and touch the insde of the tusk and see if the pin penetrates. If it does they are fake.

Thanks Chris. I'm going to call the person selling tomorrow, and I'll let you know what happens after I see them if they are still available.

I just got off the phone with the seller, and she said there are a few cracks, and they weigh 11 pounds together. I'm going to see them tonight. I just hope they are real.

Rodney,
Well, what do you think? Are they real. Did you get them?

I went to see them last night, but did not buy them. Each tusk is about 2 feet long, and pretty well cracked. They weighed over 10 pounds, but they were hollow. I'm pretty sure they are hollow all the way through, but I really don't know enough about ivory to tell. The thickest I could verify for sure was only 1/16th, but I think they got a little thicker(not much) further in.

They seemed real to me, but I am not 100% sure. The owner believes her father got them in sumatra. It also sounds like she talked to david(Warther?) in ohio? about them.

Chris, If this sounds like something you are interested in, let me know, we can work out a trade or something. She may take less than $300.

2 foot long and that thin at the end does not equal a 5 pound tusk. Tusks that small don't give a good yield but could still yield a good bit of short inlay slabs. They are not good for points but might make smaller slabs. Do they come to a point on the end. Let's work something out on them.
