Cue Crazy

I have a new customer that saw My work from another customer and intrusted me with work on a joss west that his dad passed down to Him sometime ago. He said that It was built in the 80's, and his dad bought the cue for $200 at one time. He 's telling me He thinks It's worth around the 2 hundred, and I'm telling him you might be suprised what It's worth now ;) :p . It's a 4 pointer with three or four veneer and the points are really even for a 80's cue. The ringwork is just the black slotted billet. Wondering what others think a fair estimate would be on a cue like this? It's rare that I see one where I'm at, so don't have alot to base It on.

I'm just reconditioning the shaft on this one, but he did ask me about refinishing the cue. Wondering who would be the best person to recomend for refinish job? One thing I noticed right out the gate on this cue was it has more forward balance then alot of cues, but I'd like to hear what ever info I can on these cues. The cue is really in very nice condition though & still very solid.

Thanks, Greg

jw's are not doing well in the secondary market, so i think maybe YOU might be surprised at it's market value:)

my opinion: just cuz a cue is old doesn't mean it will sell at an appreciated value. add to that, there are hundreds if not thousands of jw's out there like it. also, it's a standard 4pt/4 veneer, nothing extraordinary. lastly,,,,it's used.

Mr. Stroud posts on here and would be the best bet as far as a refinish.

I can also do it. PM if you need any info.

Depending on condition I would say between $800 and $1200.

Thanks guys,

I have to admitt I thought It may be worth a hair more, because most older bigger named cues I see have a higher value, but I rarely see JW, and that's still a far cry from the $200 He thought It was worth. I did tell Him not to ever sell It that cheap though, but he assured me he would never sell it anyway due to the sentimental value the cue has to him with His father passing It down.
Other then maybe refinishing the joint on a shaft or an ocasional buttsleeve, I don't do refinishes on other make cues for the most part. My methods are not the same as some, and therefore I'm only using them on My cues at the time. Besides that, I would recomend He keep It original if possible and have Mr Stroud refinish the cue.
I'm not sure how serious He is about the refinish yet, but if He seems Like it's something He's ready to do, I'll run his options by him, and try to help send him in the right direction whatever he decides. The cue looks like It would be a fairly easy job for the right person, as it has held up well over the years. The butt cap is a touch smaller then the sleeve with no ringwork at the transition point to deal with, but all the ringwork up top, the veneers, and joint seem well intact, and nice & even.

Anyway the info is much apprieitated,
Thanks Again, Greg

without looking at the actural cue.... I would said at least $800.00 for an ok condition JW cue.:)

actually, that's a good way to start, now that i think about it.

price for same brand new today,,,,minus condition(cost for a makeover dents dings refinish etc), minus age, plus "are jw's from that period in demand". inflation alone may raise the value.

See the following link:
http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=56524
It shows the asking price on a simple 4 point JW with veneers. Right in the middle of my estimated value. What the selling price will be. Who knows, but probably not the full asking price.

Same basic design except for a few things. It was steel joint piloted 5/16-14 insert I believe, and the ringwork looks just like the cue in that link, however the logo may be different If I remember correctly, but I know the year was'nt on this guy's cue like the 1988 on that one. Also seems like his points were sharper looking then the one in the link. Is It just me or do those ends look alittle rounded or milled? Maybe It's just the picture.
Either way I don't think the guy will ever sell anyway, because the cue means so much to him, but maybe knowing It's worth more then his dad paid for It will Be nice to know, and make It more worth restoring, altough I don't think that was as much about preserving any value, as It was more preserving a memory & something that means alot to Him.:)
I know he was happy with the tip and shaft work I did from word of mouth, but I was stuck in shop, and My dad delivered, so I have'nt had a chance to talk with him again about the finish & His options. Next time I see Him I will.

Thanks, Greg
