Here are a few pics of a case I made for a friend of mine. I've been making leather cases for quite some time and whenever I got a hide of leather with a "brand" stamped in it, I always used this in a case. I really think the "brand" adds something to the case. Unfortunately, you might be able to make several cases out of one hide of leather but you can only make ONE case with the brand in it. Now, you almost NEVER find a hide with a "brand" in it. I think they just tag the ear of the cow now so they don't have to damage ( I don't think it's damaged at all) the hide with a stamp in it.
This was a really beautiful hide of "hair on" leather that I recently bought. The hair is nice and short and much easier to work with than a hide with long hair. The hide had a "brand" stamped into that looks like a fancy "S." I made sure I put that "brand" right in the middle of the case. I made the two pouches out of the "hair on" leather and surrounded it with a very thick buckskin leather on top and bottom. This is a 3 butt 4 shaft case with covered tubes inside. I put my the name in it, Dennis, in raised letters, as well as my initials, "JH." I can't tell you how I hated to cut into this full hide of leather because it was so beautiful and would have made a really nice fireplace rug or wall hanging.
