US Open Champ to play in World Championship in Manila

JOHN SCHMIDT, the newly crowned US Open pool champion, has been awarded a slot in the World Pool Championship in Manila in November, representing the United States.

Nicknamed “Mr. 400”, Schmidt defeated the Philippines’ Rodolfo “Boy Samson” Luat 11-6 in the US Open finals to take the prestigious title. Soon after his victory, he was extended the WPC slot by Matchroom Sport, the lead promoter of the world championship tournament.

The 32-year-old Schmidt has drawn a lot of international attention lately because he has broken the Americans’ title drought in major pool championships in recent years. They haven’t won the world championship for four years running, and they have been shut out in three successive tournaments of the International Pool Tour. The two previous US open champions were non-Americans. Schmidt could bring honors to the US in the coming WPC tilt where his elders have failed.

He will join top US players like Earl Strickland, Johnny Archer, Rodney Morris and Corey Deuel in the Manila tourney.

Schmidt’s professional record, though brief, is already impressive.

* He turned professional only two years ago when he gave up golf to devote his time exclusively to pool..

* He is now the US champion in straight pool (14.1 Continuous) and a top 16 player in 9-ball and 8-ball.

* He earned the nickname “Mr. 400” because of a high run of 400 balls in straight pool.

Originally from San Diego, California, he now resides in Milton, Florida where he hones his skills as a pool player.
Filipino pool players and fans are eager to see Schmidt play in the world pool tournament in Manila because he eliminated three top RP players at the US Open: Antonio Gabica, Ronato Alcano and Rodolfo Luat. Mr. 400 could be the real thing. #

Don ... Isn't it amazing how your gesture has changed the lives involved so much already, and even the people that have just heard the story.
Who knows where it can lead? WPC champ? This story, IMO, would make a great Pool movie, especially with the way John cut through the 1 loss side defeating many great players.

Maybe we shoud call you, Don "Mr 400's Horse' Purdman from now on ... lol
