Jump Bank

3RAIL KICK

Registered
Sometimes, if I hit a bank too hard (sharp angle-cross side for example) that is almost straight across, it will jump on the way toward the pocket. Usually going off the table or hitting high on the cushion on its way off the table. This usually happens when I'm angry. (duh!)

Anybody do this on purpose, to maybe jump a partially obstructing ball?

If so, how?

I don't get it.

I've done it deliberately AND successfully once and was able to jump over a completely obstructed ball. However, this was merely for fun and I have yet to do it since. I struck the cue-ball as I would for a small jump which caused the object ball to jump. If the object ball hits the rail on the fly, the jump will be multiplied.

Jumping an object ball is actually a common shot among trick-shot artists. The only unusual aspect is when you add a rail to it. Since you need to be very aware of all the variables (distance to the object ball and distance to the rail), it becomes a very specialized shot. I wouldn't recommend spending countless hours perfecting it. It's the kind of shot that could drive you mad.

I've seen Dave Gomez from Denver do this near the end of a big tournament. He hopped the Q-ball slightly so it would hit high on the OB and the OB would hop a little before hitting the rail just slightly in the air. OB jumped off the rail over obstructing balls and went in the opposite corner. My buddies and I were setting that shot up for weeks. It's not as difficult as it seems at first--after you've done it about 4,000 times!

TSN in Canada has been running the Border Battle matches over the last week or so, and one spectactular shot was the Dancing Bear playing a kick-jump out of a tight safety. Not only did he hit the ball, but hit on the way down with enough backspin that the cb reversed to hit the two obstructing balls, which were a plant into the corner ! You are right, it is not as hard as it looks. It is difficult to control, but I find using a 'wrist only' stroke (not unlike a dart toss jump stype stroke) on this shot helps me to not to overpower the shot.

Maybe someone in Canada taped the episode of Border Battle yesterday evening ... anyone ?

It was a spectacular shot.
