Jumping with Shooting Cue

I was just thinking about the trend that is going on with Jump/break cues. With the phenolic ferrule-tip combo, jumping has become easy even for some who never practice it. Lately there have been some changes made to prevent such an easy way out of a safety, such as... no jump cues. Okay fine... there are full cues with special ferrules, or tips that jump easily. Here's the part that I don't care for- In Reno, and other organizations.. you must jump with your shooting cue. Hmmmm. Now there are many ways to counter my arguement here and I am aware of that. But seriously- I am allowed to have two cues at the table.. one to break with, and one to shoot with. WHY is that? Maybe it's the possibility that you find a great cue that breaks better than you shooting cue.. maybe. Maybe it's because you get a better grip than on your irish linen wrap, and you get more speed. Maybe because it's lighter/heavier, and you feel you generate more power. Or the reason why I use one most importantly, in addition to the reasons above, to preserve the tip on my playing cue. If all of these things are okay, and I am allowed to use an extra cue at the table- why on earth do I have to jack up and shoot a shot(that I practice, because it's a shot) with the likelyhood of damaging my tip on my playing cue, or popping it off on a jump shot? I really rolled my eyes in Reno when they said you can only jump with your playing cue. But, with the inclusion of the new type of break/jump cues, I assume something had to be done.. My question is: Was this the right way to combat this? Why am I allowed two cues at the table, but have restrictions on one? If there are restrictions on one, why can't it be on using the new type jump cues(obviously this would be hard to enforce). But in all seriousness.. I have a pretty typical break cue (real tip, regular shaft) and I jump very well with it. My playing cue hits better all around, so I use it for all other shots besides the break and jumps. Why do people need to be punished for doing something exceptionally well by lots of practice, by not being allowed to use an instrument for play, that is already allowed at the table?

I used to jump with my playing cue when I shot with a schon, joss, or scruggs. Never had any real issues with the tip or anything else as long as I had a ball and half or so of room. Can't do it anymore, got lazy and brought a jump cue.

Just takes practice

I can jump with my playing cue as well, the phenolic tip jumnp break cue I bought was mainly for breaking since APA doesnt allow jump cues (stupid rule). But jumping with the full size phenolic tip cue is easier then jumping with my playing cue. I can do it with either though, just now I prefer the phenolic.

APA now lets you shoot with as many different cues you want as long as they are of normal weight and length. I never really screwed a tip up jumping though, but I never did anything assinine while jumping either.

For full ball jumps, my Schon is really no good unless the interfering ball is far away.. but I can do much better and have full confidence jumping with my break cue. I have munched a tip in the past by trying to get maximum draw off of a jump shot on my playing cue. I use Le Pro's, and they don't always hold up well when you miscue on the edges with a lot of force.

Are you allowed to switch the shaft on your playing cue in Reno?
If so, are you allowed to switch a shaft on your playing cue when you need to make a jump shot?
A customer of mine did just that with his X Breaker. Since the X Breaker features a 5/16x14 thread which would fit a Scrugg, Schon, Old Predator, Old Pechauer, Falcon...etc and he plays with a Schon, he just told his opponent he needed to switch shaft, made the jump shot, and then switched back to his playing shaft. It took a bit of time but he said it was worth it since his chance of making and controlling the shot was much higher with the X Breaker shaft.
May be some other jump break cue would allow that as well depending on what your playing cue is.

Actually, the APA says that you must finish the rack with the stick and shaft that you shoot the first ball with after the break. Sucks, huh?

Let those who like the APA play there... I think their endless nitpicking on these things is a real turn off. The APA's not the way to go for me...
