the 20 year old plays some kick-a$$ pool, and btw she played some kick-a$$ kicks. one thing i noticed a couple of times in the match,,,,,,very good players but when faced with a situation where they have to do something special with the CB, they don't pull it off.

I watched part of it last night but have it on tape so I will rewatch it later today and transfer it to my keeper tapes.

The way she shoots she will be in the top 5 very shortly.

I hadn't heard about that match; I wish I would've seen it. Did you notice if Accu-Stats was taping it?

i did not notice. i didn't know accustats did the women. check outwpba.com, and look at the tv schedule.

Thanks, Bruin. Accu-Stats does women's matches too. I have a match between Jeanette and Vivian.

I watched it last night too. I liked Ga Young Kim! I do agree that both players made some serious mistakes and missed some easy shots. They made a lot of tough shots, though, and overall, I thought it was a very entertaining match. I very seldom get to watch pool on TV so I'd be thrilled to watch just about anyone play!

Ga Young has played in my tour a couple times and she just races around the table! The only thing slowing her up is that she has to wait until the balls stop moving. She did a 9-1 finals in 35 minutes! And when she has to kick, she just lines up and does it - doesn't have to walk around the table like other players do. She's amazing to watch and I agree she'll be in the top 10 within a year.

Barbara,

Having Vivian and Ga Young playing must have made ESPN a little nervous. They both play pretty fast. I've seen Vivian get through a rack pretty fast too when she's in her rithym. I wonder if Ga Young's pace will have any effect on Karen and Allison because they are so methodical?

I only saw the last few minutes of this match. Hopefully they will replay it. But I’ve had the good fortune of playing against her in several local tourneys. And from what I’ve seen she should be in the top 5 before long. Since I didn’t see the entire match I’m not sure about the special CB situations you’re referring to. I will say the last few minutes in front of the camera, she looked pretty nervous. She also has a fairly quick pace when comfortable and playing well.

Rick

Rick W., I think that it’ll have an opposite effect, more likely, Karen’s or Allison’s play could affect Ga Young’s.

Rick

You might be right hustlefinger but did you ever see Machine Gun Lou Buterra play? He played so fast that he threw people out into the ozone! I watched him and was totally mesmerized! I don't thing Ga Young would even come close to playing that fast. I think a player's tempo, if it's unusual, will throw the other player off whether it's slow or fast. Especially the person that is at the table more or who is ahead in the game.

Kim is an amazing talent. I thought she also handled that whole tornado interaction thing with the crowd alot better than Jeanette Lee did.
Is it me, or does ESPN use the over the shoulder of the shooter camera angle alot? Its notable because the womans butt fills the lower half of the tv screen. I'm not complaining, believe me I'm not complaining, but I don't ever remember seeing that in any televised Men's matches(thank God).

Rick W., I agree that either slow or fast play can throw off another player’s game. I’m just saying that a younger less experienced fast tempo type player will probably have more difficulty dealing with a more accomplished slower tempo player, IMO. The Mr. Sandman syndrome - an impatient grasshopper has a disadvantage.

I’ve seen Lou play and he IS fast. And no, I don’t think Ga Young is anywhere near that fast. And shouldn’t be.

Rick

Rick,

I think you're probably right. Karen and Allison are much less likely to get rattled given their experience and discipline.

14.1,

I caught that action between Vivian and the crowd too. Vivian really borders on sharking some times. I don't know if she means to do that or not but it looks like it can be very distractful at times. I think ESPN kind of encourages it a little too.

I think the camera people are trying hard not to show something they shouldn't when the ladies play. Some of the women wear tops that can show more than they intended when the camera is shooting straight down their front. I don't think women players should have to dress a certain way for this not to happen. They have a right to dress stylishly. Most of the women I know would be adamant about being stylish if they were on TV.

I agree. She plays well but I think she should slow her game down a bit. Rodney Morris used to play just as fast and played well (that's how he got the nickname "Rocket") but he eventually slowed his game down and played more consistent.

There is an up-and-coming girl from Hawaii named Phoebe Choy that I’ve watched play at Hawaiian Brian’s. She’s got game and plays real good for the money when she gambles there with the guys. With a few breaks she could also be a regular on the WPBA circuit. She certainly plays better than 50% of the players currently on that tour and if they were judging looks, she would be in the top ten.http://hawaiianbrians.com/hawaii_women.htm

I just finished watching it again and it didn't appear to me that Kim played all that fast. But then, she didn't need to use any extensions either. But how does a player playing fast affect the other player?

Jeannie Seaver had a front row seat and did pretty good there with a 13th place finish.

I don't see Kim on the WPBA points list. There is a Gy Kim. When did she come to the States and how did she qualify for the WPBA?

She sure did prove that she can play though.

Tonight at 4:00pm ESPN will be televising another WPBA event. Perhaps it is the final of the US Open with Kim playing Corr.

Jake

Jake,

She's been traveling the Regional Tour route. She had to have gotten the US Open spot from a tour hosting a State Championship. I'm reasonably sure it was from the CAT tour. All Qualifiers for State Championships are spots in the US Open. Her Canadian Qualifier came from my tour at my July event.

I'm just hoping she gets a spot in the WPBA Nationals in November.

villareal shoots fast but + her chit chat = an average paced game.

kim counterpointed villareal nicely. in fact, i liked the drama of two different personalities, especially when the serious one is kicking the other's butt. the whole lee/villareal thing was a farce.
