I've been using Kamui black/clear super softs for a number of years and like them and am considering trying the Kamui tans. If you have personal experience with using Kamui tans and blacks, (I don't care if they had the clear pad on them or not), I'd like to know your thoughts. I want to know if you tried them both and settled on the tan or the black and why.

To keep this on topic, if you went from a Kamui to a G2 or a Zan or piece of an old truck tire, that's great but I don't care about that. Please offer thoughts on the blacks and tans if you have experience using them and if you stayed with them, which did you choose.

Thanks in advance.

Only one i ever like was a brown medium. Decent tip but stupidly over-priced. Ultraskins at less than 1/5 price are just as good.

they play the same different color
Pretty much this.

I started with the black and really hated them because of how quickly they mushroomed, glazed over and lost the feel they had when new.

I switched to the brown in the hopes that they were better. Different color, same result.

Now I play wizard, or ultraskin. I like both much better and they're much more reasonably priced.

Black is more requested than the Original tips. If I get to decide, I always install Original or Clear Original, the chalk adheres better on the Original tips. As for maintenance, I don't see a difference at all.
I install hundreds of tips each year and I'm a certified Kamui dealer.

Both.

I switched from Black to original on the advice that the original played a little firmer. I feel it may be true since I have been playing with the original. It could all be in my head, but it works. I use medium tips and like one on the harder side. I believe I was told this on this site once upon a time

I liked the Kamui Black soft when new and for the first couple of months. I liked the Brown better over the lifespan.
If you need help picking dinner or color of your next car, I also have opinions on various meats and veggies and what colors I like.

It's an easy thing to try out, get one installed and decide for yourself, it's not like you are going out to buy a $500 shaft or a $400,000 house and need opinions about the neighborhood. I find that asking about items that are all personal preference just gives a bunch of extra noise that is not really helpful.

I have played with both and my preference is tan/original. Kamui black are both harder and more bouncy (elastic) than the brown for a given hardness e.g. M. The Black has a smaller grain size resulting in it being smoother, so it it less good at holding chalk and it glazes more. When you shape the black with a shaper you hey a fine black dust that looks nasty, not like the leather particles in the brown.

This is a bit off topic, but I had the opportunity to try out the new Kamui Athlete tip at my local billiards shop over the weekend. The Athlete is a layered tip with the bottom half being of hard leather, and the upper half being medium leather. Gives a good solid hit with a bit of give. I know it sounds crazy, but give it a try if you can.

Some time back I bought a spare shaft that the previous owner installed a Kamui tan on it but did not remember the hardness. I really like the way it played so I took a chance and installed a tan/clear soft on a spare shaft, it hit well but a bit harder than I liked.

Most of the data I've read, and the data on the Kamui site, (as I understand it), says the tans are slightly harder and less flexible than the black so I'm going to try a tan/clear super soft hoping it plays between the SS black and a S tan.

I may be splitting hairs here but, we'll see ....... Thanks for the responses.

I install lots of Kamui tips and the overwhelming majority go with the black/clear. I have tried to tans many times and to be honest, can't tell much difference, IMHO.

Wizard's don't get the respect they deserve imo. Yeah they've been around a long time but they are a very well made/consistent tip at a good price.
