Last 16, interesting stats

Every year it seems to be a war on the message boards, this year is no exception :) let me fan the flames with some fun stats...of the countries that sent 4 or more players, here is a breakdown of percentages still left vs percentages of starting players:

Taiwan -- 19 started 5 remain (15% --> 31%) (19/128 --> 5/16)
USA -- 12 started 3 remain (9% --> 19%)
Netherlands -- 5 started 1 remains (4% --> 6%)
Germany -- 9 started 1 remains (7% --> 6%)
Philippines -- 10 started 1 remains (8% --> 6%)
England -- 9 started 0 remain (7% --> 0%)
Australia -- 4 started 0 remain (3% --> 0%)
Canada -- 4 started 0 remain (3% --> 0%)
Japan -- 4 started 0 remain (3% --> 0%)

Since many people like to consider Europe as a whole:
Europe -- 56(!) started 6 remain (44% --> 38%)

of choosing the last 16 as a starting point was purposeful, lol, but when you consider the USA started with 9% of the players and have 19% of the remaining players, those that have written the USA off as underacheiving have some things to think about, as along with the taiwanese players, they seem to be the real overachievers thus far! europe doesn't look nearly so dominating when you consider they had 56 players to begin the tournament, although they are certainly doing well (perhaps underachieving slightly).

other fun facts -- if i told you that there would be 5 taiwanese, 3 americans, and 1 filipino left with 16 standing and the names yang, chao, archer, strickland, pagulayan, reyes, and bustamante would not be among them, how many of you would have called me crazy??

young man's game? haven't verified this, but heard that rodney morris is the oldest player left standing @ 34 yrs old.

new champion? only germany's hohmann and finland's immonen remain in the field as former world champs.

england the next world power? after strong performances by uzzell and hundal, those predicting england as the next great pool power are left with the feeling of "oops!" as 0 of 9 remain in the last 16.

what happened to the philippines? perhaps the strongest group top to bottom, a group presumably much more comfortable with the climate, atmosphere, and jet lag than most foreigners, and fueled by manalo dominating his match 10-0, one wonders how the philippines has one man standing out of 10 in the last 16.

have fun, and of course tommorrow all these numbers will have changed and you can make fun of me :)

Yikes! Fun facts indeed! Wouldn't it be great to have Immonen vs. Hohmann in the Finals? How's that for a dream match-up?

If it's true that Morris is the oldest one left, then it has definitely become a young man's game. Would be nice to know how many years each of the remaining players have been playing professionally....

Taiwan still has 26% of their players left in the game,
US 25%
Netherlands 20%
Germany 11%
Philippines 10%

How'd Sweden do?

well, you picked a different way to say almost the same thing i was, your way might be clearer, lol. as for sweden, they are 1/3 but i am not sure why they did not send what i would consider to be their 2nd best player in nicholas bergendorf. its hard to make much of the stats if a country doesn't send many players, either they do really well because of one player or get nothing.

yeah, i was hoping to get different results but as it turned out the order was still the same. I was asking about sweden cause then they'd be on top with a 33% success rate.

well, if we include countries that sent only one or a few players, sweden would be tied for fourth with vietnam (1/3, 33%) behind czech republic (1/1, 100%), finland (1/2, 50%) and hungary (1/2, 50%). that is what i meant when i said its hard to compare countries that send very few players, if one player does well, it boosts the countries stats by a huge amount....on the other hand if chamat or immonen (for instance) happened to have a bad day, a single loss would drop their countries stats to zero! its much easier to compare the countries with lots of players like taiwan, usa, germany, philippines, england, etc...

Immonen vs. Hohmann in the Finals??? Impossible. It's not gonna happen as they are bracketed on the lower half and will meet each other in the semis.

Oops. didn't know about that one. but it would have made for an interesting finals, don't you think?
