League Play pattern

What's your opinion on league play of round robin with 4 player of only one game for points...trying to see if players think it's a good way to measure a players skill or just 50/50 chance of luck to win games. What's your take? THanks

Sure it’s high variance, but overtime with many games your real skill level will come out. Kind of smoothes out hot streaks but also amplifies bad luck or bad rolls. That’s why you need to take a look at this format as a marathon and not a sprint.

League scoring is weird... it works out in the end after a session of many (20+) weeks, but in that time even the top players will have horrendous nights where the rolls don't go their way and/or they miss a shot they really should make.

It seems I always have a slump during our league (27 weeks/5 games a week) where I'll get below average scores for spurts and they shoot lights out for a few weeks. On one occasion, we had to make up a week that was cancelled and I, playing with a 17 point system (5gamesx17point=85points) shot a 27 and a 73 on the same night. One of my worst, followed by one of my best. Came down to rolls.... good or bad.

You need a totally different approach to playing league compared to play a race to 5 or 7 in 8 ball. League has no real flow and you have to treat every game like your hill-hill in a match, where in a match, you can sometimes relax a bit if you're up a few games and feel like you're shooting well.

I am in a league like that now playing 8 ball, 10 points to the winner, loser gets 1 point for every ball pocketed, you break 2 and rack 2, if you break and run you win 10-0 and your opponent can opt to try and B&R, if he does, you break again and whoever wins wins the match, I play this league different than I would play a race to format, if I can't run out or get out of position on a runout I play safeties, would you rather lose 10-2 or 10-7? Because it's a team game and prize money at the end of the year I am more concerned about maximizing points than taking risky shots, I am proficient in the safety game and it has angered some opposing team members who think you should always try to runout no matter how unlikely the runout is, we have been #1 or #2 going into the playoffs the last couple of years, It's not my favorite way to play but I believe it gives me the best chance to score the most points, so, is this format a good way measure skill? I guess it depends on if you think shot making or understanding how to win your matches requires the most skill.
