Just need some opinions. My league recently switched from a 5 man format to 4 man and it raised a big argument. When it was five man each player would shoot only 3 members of the opposing team, giving only 15 games a night. We said it was unfair to award a league and team top shooter cause not everybody would play the some people and have the same odds. We voted and won to switch to 4 man and shoot 4 on 4. That way everybody shoots everybody and the odds are the same. For some reason this caused a uproar and we lost some teams. In your opinion what would be better 4 or 5? What would be the ups and downs of either?

Lol

Never heard of 5 man teams only playing 3 members on opposing team before, and this is not a standard format for a National league. It must have been the league operator that defined that format. 5 man teams are usually
'Match play', which means you play 1 member of the opposing team 5 games.
Match play is prevalent in the BCA.

You indicated 'Round Robin' play though, and 4 members works better for it, especially to get all 16 games in, in a reasonable time in the evening.

What 'league' do you play in?

Zim's Rack 8-Ball League (the league I run) is a 4 player system. Each team plays 4 players and we use a round robin format, 16 games total. We start at 7:30pm and usually end around 10-10:30pm. We count total balls, not wins/loses or rounds won, just total balls, and we include the handicap points in the total also. No playoffs, just play for 15 weeks, team with most balls or points wins 1st and that is how we rate teams in the standings- total balls!

Our MVP is determined by Win %, Perfect Weeks, Perfect Games, Table Runs and Balls Against. Our players play nearly ALL of the active players in the league 1 game... a TRUE MVP!

Just my .02!

We play VNEA here, 5 man teams. Some leagues play the 15 game format as you did before. But most play 25 game format, so you play everyone on the other team one game. On two tables (which we are guarenteed 2 tables to shoot on each night) our matches run around 2 hours. Some of the lower leagues can take up to 3 hours. Still not bad time wise.
