Leather wrap questions

A banger at best...

If a person were to buy a piece of hide or leather, how hard would it be for a cuemaker to change out a linen wrap to that particular piece of leather? How big of a piece would be needed for a wrap? What type of leathers work best? And finally, in your opinion, who does the best leather wraps on cues?

Thank you,
Shorty

Not sure about the rest Shorty but Mike Webb does incredible leather wraps.

HI SHORTY

I HAVE DONE A COUPLE OF WRAPS IN LEATHER THAT WAS NOT PURCHASED THRU NORMAL CUE SUPPY CHANNELS. MY EXPERIENCE WAS THAT THE THICKNESS WAS VARIABLE TO THE POINT THAT IT MADE THE FINISHED PRODUCT CONSIDERABLY LESS THAN PERFECT. THIS INCOSISTENCY SHOWS UP AT THE WRAP ENDS AND THE LONG SEAM. LEATHER IS PLENTY HARD ENOUGH TO WORK WITH WHEN USING THE RIGHT STUFF. JUST MY THOUGHTS, HOPE THIS HELPS. MARK (marksmithcues.com)

Yes, I have heard likewise about Mr. Webb, but I don't think he is willing to work on my cue.

Thanks anyway,
Shorty

Hi Shorty
You are more than welcome to send me your cue, I use my own leathers. And seeing it's you, don't send any money up front. I want to make sure your happy first because I don't give refunds.

Okay Mr. Webb,
I will be finishing up with my cue this coming weekend as we have APA cities championships for a chance to go to Vegas. After I am done, I will send you my butt of my cue and I would like a lizard print black leather wrap put on it.

How much will this set me back?

Shorty

Good choice, I keep all prices for repairs and wraps on the web-site. Don't send any money with the cue. Let's make sure your happy first.

And one last question...I heard leather helps repel the cigarette smoke as well...is this correct? I will be so glad when they just plan ban smoking altogether. I can't stand it.

Don't know the answer to that one. I try to be positive in saying for every person who complains about smoking, there's another who says it's their right to do it. The officials took away the right to do it in 7 States but they haven't taken away the right to sell them. Sought of ironic don't you think.

Mike,
Another thing that is ironic, (along the same lines) is a store that sells cigarettes, but won't let you smoke in that store.
I was in a Tobacco Shop in Gatlinburg, TN and they had big "NO SMOKING" signs all over the place.

Mike, what (in your opinion) would be the thinnest a leather wrap could be without compromising it?

I have seen .018 and up. Depends on the leather. I think pig and lizard would be okay at that thickness but no cow. To soft and to much elasticity.

Ok, thanks Mike.
What about the Tiger Stack wraps?
How thin do you think you could possibly go with that?

Sorry, don't know nothing about stack wraps, I do linen, leather and if I'm in a real good mood, I'll do cork on my cues only.
