Lee Brett - Coaching Clinic Tour

I had the great privilege to meet and work with Lee Brett this past Saturday, October 19, 2013. Lee had scheduled a stop in Albuquerque, NM at Doc and Eddy's and was offering a 4 hour coaching clinic. Lee provided to each student a copy of his DVD and written content covering the day's topics.

The target audience of Lee's basic coaching clinic is the casual/novice/beginning to intermediate player looking for improvements in basic fundamentals. As a PBIA Instructor, I was interested in seeing how he presented his material, especially the specifics of his "V" grip and stroke (which isn't a pure pendulum style stroke - he has more of a "snooker"/"piston" stroke). In fact, Lee has done a great job translating skills learned from his snooker experiences to sound pool fundamentals and techniques.

Although Lee didn't go over his "stroke" in great detail with us individually, I did get a fantastic introduction into his approach to cue ball/speed control. Lee has a no-nonsense methodology that, to me, was worth the entire asking price of his clinic. Our (PBIA) methods of teaching speed control are great for presenting drills and diagnostics on what speeds you’re stroking at, but Lee adds a layer of "how" to do it that can create repeatable and reliable results in a much shorter amount of time for the "average" student. Lee was very direct with me in "not" changing my entire stroke mechanics, but to instead focus on incorporating some of his key techniques into my own stroke for speed and cue ball control.

Lee covered his approach to a "pre-shot routine" with particular attention on how to approach a shot from "thinking" to "sub-conscious" shooting (brain on – brain off). Lee teaches his 1 to 5 PSR that covers all the basics I try to get across to my students. Lee takes time to do an evaluation of each student's shooting mechanics and PSR. He then offers each student some recommendations for further work. What I found most useful from Lee’s PSR methodology is his explanations and demonstrations on alignment and aiming. In the PBIA we refer to this a "walking the line" and Lee does a fantastic job communicating why and how to do this.

So, if you have about 4 hours and Lee is in your area, I highly recommend working with him. Lee is an excellent at communicating the “how” and “why” of pool fundamentals. He has the experience and patience to teach others (something that not all pool players have). I know that he is also offering more “advanced” 1:1 workshops to those that ask. He is coming back around NM in a few weeks and I’m going to again spend some time with him working on some more “advanced” topics.

Here is the thread with info on Lee's current teaching tour.

Very nice review. This review should be especially enlightening since it came from a PBIA instructor.
