LePro Tips - Hardness?

ok, i got my new tips today from Muellers. A Talisman, Everest, Tsunami, and the LePro tips. some have mentioned before that LePro's are notorious for being inconsistent. this might be a dumb question, but is there any way i can tell if this is a good batch of LePro tips? i am hoping they are of the medium hardness. that is what all the other tips are.

and here's another stupid question. the Talisman, Everest, and Tsunami are all 14 mm, but i play with a 12.5 mm. i assume that whoever puts the tips on can get it where i want it? or is there something i have to do here, such as sand it down?

hope i get some answers quick, cause i am leaving for Orners about 9:00 tomorrow (friday) morning.

Play with it, if it feels good, it's good.

Yes, they will size them for you. You don't need to alter them.

I take it, you are from Indiana? Where abouts?

If a LePro is bad you usually know right after its put on. You can tell because the tip will seperate a little making it so you can push it up and down a bit, at least that has been my experience.

On a side note to RCB I am also from Indiana, are you?

DCP.. press your thumbnail down hard into the tip. The Lepro I have won't dent a bit. The tips are supposed to be oversized so they can be turned down.

The person installing the tip should be able to tell if the Le Pro is a Medium when prep'ing the glue side. The installer also will size the tip to the ferrule, burnish & shape it all as part of installation.

Indiana

lots of indiana boys on this site...sadly I think all of you are a two hour drive away

well, is there any way i can tell if these LePro tips are hard or medium BEFORE i have one installed?

and as it says in the upper right corner, i am in SW Indiana, about 2 hours SSW of Indy, about 30 miles east of Vincennes.

oh, i tried to play tonight, broke some racks. nothing but horrible luck and rolls again, and then when i had a couple of decent chances, guess what? yep, your right, messed them up, almost threw some balls. i give up.

I think you should do even LESS of what you learned in your lesson and go back to your old way.

BTW, don't be putting that LePro on your favorite cue. It's a POS. Install the LePro on a lesser cue that you don't use that often or the one that stands a good chance of being javelined through a wall. Use the Everest on your favorite cue.

You can do the fingernail dent test. I have heard of dropping it on a piece of metal and telling by a "tink" sound it makes. I have also heard the ones with smooth backs are better than the wrinkled ones.

I saw that after I asked. I live in NW Indiana, anyone else in here?

ever thought about lessons on the mental side? sounds like you're a bit self destructive. for every unlucky or bad roll, in turn there are good rolls. seems like you're trying to run before you walk. take a break from trying to run racks for a while, practice what you took the lessons for, and then try again.

the lesson isn't worth jack shit if you don't apply it in practice.

then again, maybe you should take up baseball.........

How 'bout that...for a mere $460 - $995 you can have tip consistency for the rest of your life. After you buy one BillyBob, do you think you could be a real pal and lend it to me for a few weeks? I promise that I won't delay and will return it immediately. ;)

That's a bit much for me!

But some dealers like Billiards and Bagels in Gresham Oregon have a durometer and test/mark each tip for its actual hardness. The guy there says tips from the same box can be quite different...

[Billiards and Bagels does not have a web site so far as I know..]

Yeah, Tracy, I am here every once in a while. How are things in your neck of the woods? Maybe we could find some place to get together sometime?

I used to live down around there, lots of great places to fish. I miss that area.

Used to be some decent places in Terre Haute to get a tip put on.

And for what its worth I like LePro tips, don't have a lot of problems with them in the last year or so. Did have some that were crap, but lately they haven't been bad.

Hey Jim,
I play here, at the VFW, every saturday. Table time is free, but if you lose you sit and wait for a game or two 'til it is your turn again. Give me a call if you would like to come over, to make sure I'm going to be in town. Oh, I forgot, we play BCA-Rules 9-Ball on a 9' Brunswick Saratoga model. As an aside, there is a pool room in Logansport now with a weekly tournament that alternates 8 & 9 Ball on wednesdays. They run a monthly 9 Ball tourney on saturdays with a bigger entry. The place is called "Coonies", they have 10-7' tables drop pocket type covered with Simonis. Maybe the club would like to make a field trip :)

Don't worry about calling before I come. I wouldn't be able to find it without directions. Hopefully I'll be in touch some Friday in the near future.

I've got a deal for you dm... send me $50 and I'll send you a ball bearing, a weight to drop, a stand to drop it from (plus hold the tip-and-ball), and some cheap calipers to measure the indentation ... heck, with a couple of known hardness samples, you could even calibrate it !

Seriously, to test relative hardness between tips you can rig up an ad hoc hardness tester quite easily, kinda like the above. Don't hit the ball with too much weight or from too high a height, the little indentation might not be so little :) Of course I switched back to Elk Masters so it really doesn't matter to me, I know they're soft (I tip my own cues...)

Would that be American, Canadian, Euro or Francs?

All of the above, please... $50 Canadian doesn't go too far these days !
