Live vs recorded

We currently record, edit and publish our weekly 9-ball challenge matchs (1 Amateur and 1 Elite match)

We're in Quebec (Canada) so it's all in french (for now)

http://vimeo.com/channels/armmx

We have an official website that annonce the matchs everyweek and we're trying to add audio interviews as much as we can.

http://www.allerretour.ca

It's more work but I find the image quality better and less lag than livestreams.

We're planning to do a livestream for the big final next june

What do you think ? Can I achieve similar results with livestream ?

Thanks

I have to agree... recorded video is better all round mostly because:

- live streams are a one off opportunity and most viewers will either be competing at the event or indisposed at the time.

- the recorded video can be viewed at higher quality by everyone at anytime well into the future.

- cameras usually cannot stream and record high quality at the same time so you are relying on stream backup for your archive which is not of much better quality than the stream... most computers cannot backup on higher quality settings because they don't have the memory resources to keep up.

Thanks for the facts WilliamK

With all the hype of the live stream, people seems to appreciate only live show ! But like you said quality is usually not there !

I'm planning to record the matchs but at the same time (with an analog capture device) streaming it at lower quality with the same camera/setup. That way I'll have the best of both world

I will use ustream and probably webcammax (to draw on the image) anything else I will need ? Do I really have (any advantage) to pass the feed through Adobe flash encoder ?

The reason peeps like live stream is because they are live and therefore can interact in the chat, sweat, meet up with friends, make new friends, introduce people to our sport (which is always a good thing), and so on.

As for the quality and technical aspects of streaming, I hope some of our many streamers chime in. Many live streams have gotten very good and improving all the time. Ustream is a good choice as most stream there and that's where the "followers" go to the most. Their dashboard system is awesome.

I went to both of your sites and must say -- well done. I, and thousands of others, appreciate guys like you who are out there bringing our sport to us and introducing others to it! Keep up the good work -- Green Rep to Yea!

Thanks cmbwsu for you kind words

I'll do live stream for sure and I'll be looking for all the hints to produce the best quality I can.

Those broadcasts will bring us the visibility we need to solicitate sponsorships. We must pass the word about what we're all doing, we need audience.

Have a nice day

I agree with cw. I like streams for the chat and interaction with the commentators. The little pieces of info you can get from some of the "celeb commentators" are great. You get to not only hear things from a well known player.

IMO BigTruck is my favorite streamer. I get the best of both worlds. The live stream, chat, interaction with the commentators. He also records so I can go back later in the weeks and really pay attention to aspects of the match I may have missed or want to analyze.

Some streams are getting TOO GOOD. I have to reload the page every 15 mins so my page doesn't freeze, but I get caught up in the match and forget sometimes and it will freeze for half a rack. The streams are such high quality I want to upgrade my computer just to keep up.
