I want to start a 14.1 league. I know of a couple of different handicap systems, but I was hoping that some of you maybe able to give some better ideas.

Please let me know about a 14.1 handicap system you that you like.

Thanks

A friend of mine played straight pool against Nick van den Berg once. As a handicap, Nick was allowed to only use the 15 ball as a break ball. He still whooped his butt. Not official, but it was still challenging.

We used to have our own 14.1 league when I first started to play pool. We figured out the average BPI (Balls Per Inning) for each player in the league and used that as a HCP. This is a good question for DAN D, he and I were on the league together and he's a mathamatical genius!
If you are interested, I have created a 14.1 scoresheet that you could just print out. Let me know if you would like it and I'll email it to you!
Thanks and good luck,
Zim

Bob Jewett had a great 14.1 handicapping system in billiard digest along with a round robin set up.I'd try that one if it was me.

I was involved in the creation and running the Cincinnati Straight Pool League for about 4 years. The handicapping system was done in playoffs and payouts.

Example:

If there were 16 players,

2 divisions of 8 players, all played round robin formats.
Race to 100
$6 per person per matchg
Winner of the match won $5
After the round robin format is completed.
The top players from each division played in a playoff.

The playoffs would be 4 players from the top of the divisions
players with 7-0, 6-1, 5-2 and 4-3 would play another round robin
with $10 going to the winner of each match. $50 to the overall winner and $25 to second place

The other players that had w-l records of 3-4, 2-5, 1-6 and 0-7 would play the same playoff RR format as the top players.

The top players would play for the same amount of cash as the lower skilled players.

The winners of one division playoff would play the winners of the other divisions playoffs.

The more players the better, more divisions, more playoffs.

The handicapping is done by the playoffs. Equally skilled (or close to equally skilled) players playing for the same prize money as all the top players.

I WOULD SAY THE FAIREST WAY TO HANDICAP IS BALLS PER INNING.WHEN U SET UP YOUR LEAGUE HAVE ALL OF THE EVEN PLAYERS PLAY EACH OTHER EVEN UP AND COUNT IT AS A MATCH SO THERE WONT BE ANY SANDBAGGING.I CANT REMEMBER THE FORMULA ANYMORE ITS BEEN TOO LONG.ITS REQUIRES BOTH PLAYERS BPIS AND THE FINAL SCORE OF YOUR MATCH.ITS SOMETHING LIKE THAT.ITS BEEN TOO LONG TO REMEMBER.BUT 14.1 PLAYED RIGHT GAVE ME A LOT OF OPTIONS ON PLAYING DEFENSE FOR MY 8 BALL GAME.

MSB Promotions- What kind of league are you wanting to organize exactly? Where are the locations, how much, singles, teams, how long is each session, do you have to play in different sessions to win anything or can you win in each session?
DAN D and I were in a 14.1 league that was ran pretty effectively, simple, very thorough with numerous stats kept and was probably the best training a rookie could get for the money! 14.1 has so many training aids involved it's simply amazing what you can learn from playing the game correctly!

The league that I plan on starting is with my local room in MA. I plan on having 7 week sessions with playoffs. There would be prizes for the end of the session and the playoffs.

I've played in many different 14.1 leagues that were handicapped differently. Basically, I was looking for something new that might be simplier.

I want to thanks everyone who gave me their input.

i think you should also set up a minimum # of points. because of time restraints, some 14.1 leagues will use a low minimum,,,,like 40pts. fine for getting the game over quickly, but unfair in general. 60-70 pts sounds fair to me.

if the minimum is too low, then the better player plays not to lose, rather than win.

Just a note...
"Back in the old days"...the 70's...Steve Mizerak played "Weenie Beenie" 70 to 43, and "the Miz" ran 70 and out...4 in a row!
I did not see it, I showed up a few days later and heard about it.
