Looking for an OB1 Cue

My current cue is a McDermot EF03 cue with a G-Core shaft. I'm a semi new player, only been playing 7 months but I'm fairly good for that time. I've brocken and ran in 8 ball APA as well as 8 ball on break.. if that matters. I started looking into low deflection shafts and the OB1 caught my eye. Predator seems to be over rated to me and OB1 just looks nicer, with that wood ferrule.

I've been debating whether or not I should buy the shaft alone and place it on my McDermott butt or simply buy a OB1 cue.

The problem is, the shaft is about $220 for a shaft with a sniper tip and a cue would be $520.

Should I just buy the shaft with the sniper tip or will the shot change depending on the cue butt?

I'm fairly new so I don't really know how much of a difference the butt does... can anyone help me out here?

That's what I was thinking, but does the butt affect the shot? If it does.. it may matter a lot more than I was thinking

The main question is about the butt of a cue... does it really matter? or is it just for asthetics?

I'd suggest you to just buy the shaft. Mcdermott makes decent cues so you probably don't need to spend the extra 300 dollars just for a new butt. If you like your Mcdermott, the weight, balance and looks, then no need to change it, especially for that much money. With 500 dollars, there are better options than a full OB cue.

Sorry I didn't answer your question directly, but my advice is to save that extra money. Once again, if you liked the feel of your Mcdermott butt, then there shouldn't be any noticeable difference, or you may even like your original butt more than the OB butts.

MM options like what? If you don't mind >_>

The two butts actually look similar.. the main difference would be McDermotts wood to wood joint, and OB's metal colar joint

Have you played with the metal joint before? If so, you should definitely try one out to know what it feels like. With 520 dollars you can buy Mezz cues, which come with low deflection shafts as well. Or you can go on JJ Cues and look at the different cues they have. Most of them have an upgrade option to the OB-1 shaft.

I bought this OB wrapless cue from BigNasty a while ago as a group purchase http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=194884. It has an OB2 shaft which is the thinner shaft that resembles Efren's tape (similar to the Predator Z shaft). It is a better shaft in my opinion. Please disregard the last picture, it is not of this cue. Plus, the shaft is not new and the collars do not match, but it's straight & a great playing cue (I cleaned up the shaft as much as I could).

I'll do the $350 shipped that Nasty was asking in CONUS if you want it. This cue is very well balanced and a very good playing cue, originally sold for around $600. Note: I can take additional pictures, but it is the same spiral maple ferrule as the OB1, just thinner.

Actually, sorry for my terminology. I would have to agree with you that the terms are vague and subjective. But you feel the "hit" more. But as of most cues, its up to the player whether they like it or not disregarding the price. In your case, you really have to decide for yourself whether you would like the OB Butt more, and whether that extra 300 dollars is worth it. If you sell your mcdermott and plus the 520 dollars you were going to spend on the OB cue, you can buy yourself a nice custom cue. Its just my opinion that 300 dollars extra would not be worth it. But in reality you have to try for yourself, what works for me may not apply to you.

Well ok, the overall feel changes I guess, but does it affect the shot itself? As in deflection wise or anything else

To answer your question, deflection and characteristics of the shaft should not change when you put it on different butts, just the feel. I believe this is one of the reasons the pros use Predators/OB/Tiger shafts, they can be use any sponsor's butt w/the shafts they like. Of course there are other reasons, but that would be a good one in my book.

Another option if you want just a shaft, order it from TAR (www.theactionreprt.net) for $200 shipped. If they are still offering the same promotion, you can also select 2 pieces of their product ('T's or dvds) as a "gift with purchase". Again, they have made changes in their distribution of dvds so not sure if this is still available, but check it out.

But I also like the option to buy the one where the proceeds are going to charity as posted earlier in this thread.

Good luck w/your search. I guess you have no interest in the OB2 shaft since you made no comment on my offer for the OB cue.

Cheers,

Dave

Thanks for the info man! And not really... I don't want to jump to an 11.75 yet... I heard it's punishing if you aren't that great yet. I still have some improving when it comes to stroke.

Oh btw... I went to that site, they don't sell shafts..

Go to www.theactionreport.com and see if they are advertising it there (instead of .net). If not, email Justin (or go to their store from that site) to see if they are still doing that promotion. His email is in the contact us section.

I went to their website and didn't see anything re: the OB shafts either. I would suggest contacting Justin just in case.
