Hello everyone, i am doing some research for an article that i will be writing for a magazine, the article in part will be centered around the sub culture of the game. I have played Pool myself for many years and can offer up some slang but would like your ideas as well. Here are a few that everyone has probably heard of and used before.

"On the Snap"
"I left a Hanger"
"I got the Nuts"
"Laying down"
"Jacked up"
"You got the last three"

i'm looking for some jargon that only really hardcore pool players would recognize.

Thanks for help. I will let everyone know when the article will appear. It is a nationally distrubued magazine.

I am trying to think of terms the average Joe on the street wouldn't know.

"on the wire" - spotting someone games in a set, such as: he got 3 on the wire in a race to 7. It refers to the number of beads on a counter that are given at the beginning, giving the weaker player a 3 game head start.

I assume you know what "hill-hill" means

Sneaky Pete versus a regular or custom cue

If you refer to the game of "one hole" or "one pocket", many people won't know what you are talking about.

Here is a couple of terms in a sentance or few;

"See that railbird? Creepy nit put the bite on my stakehorse last night. Then, he claims to have clocked a shortstop the next town over and steered him here towards a couple of ham & eggers in his own house just to score some jelly. Before he could be a lamb killer...I trapped him on the barbox playing 7 ahead for 2 dimes, busted him and now hs is flashing a dirty bankroll"

Pick the words out, have fun

The few that come to mind that might be unknown to non-players are:

1. Jam up
2. Doing business
3. A package
4. Player A moves like a ghost (one hole)
5. A gapper

Good luck! I'm sure you'll get no shortage of suggestions from our friendly posters.

By the way, wikipedia.com has a glossary of pool terms that you may find helpful. Visit them at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_pool,_billiards_and_snooker_terms

cue ball - "the rock" or "whitey". As in, I can't control my rock or I sure let whitey loose on that shot.

One I heard the other night for the first time - "I'm going to pray at the Holy Church of 9 Ball." meaning I'm going to the poolroom.

Others that come to mind:
nit
shortstop
on the wire
giving weight or spotting
whack attack - blasting into the balls with no clear thought in mind
playing the ghost
the cheese - nineball
the ice - ten ball
the nuts or stone cold nuts
6 pack - running 6 racks in a row
banger
neaner beaner - guy that rides the 9 ball all the time
posting - putting the money up before play starts
orange crush - giving the five out for a spot
call 8 - 8 ball game where the ball and the pocket must be called or in 9 ball, a player is spotted the 8 but he must call the pocket in which the 8 ball will be made.
air barrel - playing someone for money with nothing in your pocket
barrels - playing someone for $10 a game with a $100 in your pocket. You have 10 barrels to fire at him.
sets - a race to 5,7,9,etc. is saying to play a set.
10 ahead set - first player to get 10 games ahead of the other player wins the set.

Air Barrel is unlikely to mean anything to anyone who isn't serious about pool.

Stun shot, draw drag, running english, nip draw, stun-follow, back-hand english, contact throw, squirt, slip stroke, and various other technical terms aren't going to make sense to those who haven't studied the game. Perhaps milk dud, full-splice, pro taper, stack wrap, butt sleeve, and other cue terms also fit your category. I'm sure there are more along these lines...

This one seems to come up all the time. I thought it was universally known that the Orange Crush is the 5-ball (orange ball) and the breaks (the crush).
