It seems the older I get the less I care....
When I was 16 and found the game of pool, I practiced for hours and hours.
Today, maybe an hour a month.....
I have lost it and cant find it.....
Anyone have any words of wisdom?

After all these years you still play and I am sure call yourself a pool player. Think of all the things you have done in your life that seemed so important at the time that today mean nothing. The fact you are on this forum means a lot. Over 1600 posts and you average one a day. You are still a player in every respect, you just don't play as much.

Getting older

Well, I am 64 now, and I just play when I want to. I don't really practice unless I am preparing for a big tournament. I go play 2-3 weekly tournaments on the weekends and that keeps me in stroke. I get into money matches sometimes, and then my killer instincts start to come back.

Mostly though, just play when you feel like it and will enjoy it.

I've been at this, here and there, pretty much my whole life and sometimes it feels like a roller coaster ride, but frankly, I enjoy the friendship and competitiveness it brings to my life and though I sometimes get in a rut, I'll play as long as physically possible. I use this forum to develop a variety of new goals for myself and it adds a positive influence to my perspective of the sport. Challenge yourself by learning!

I am going through the same.
Once upon a time I could not wait to get to the poolroom.
Now, I have no real interest in being there.
I have no real desire to play, much less compete.
I have stopped watching pool on the Web, and may miss the U.S. Open this year because last year I got bored rather quickly. I did not complete in Valley Forge this year either.
I drove up there on Saturday to hang out for a while but it did not rekindle any flames.
Actually the thought of spending 12-14 hours in a poolroom (or a weekend) for a tournament makes me want to barf.
Perhaps I burned myself out last year, who knows?

Oh well...maybe a break is all I really needed and I may be bitten by the pool bug again...who knows?

I am not too concerned though. The way I feel right now, if I don't play pool for a few months it won't matter one bit.

If I were to analyze further, it could be that the lack of interest has coincided with my realization that practicing hard and working my guts out to get better at the game has no real dividends, financial or otherwise. Of course, there is the personal satisfaction of applying yourself and being great at something, but those feelings are not there for me with this game. So, if I lose a tournament, or if I never improve from where my game is today...so what? I am not a pro, have never been a pro, and have not had any real desire to be a pro. I am not even a regional or local threat in any event.

At some point we all want to get better, want to perform better, but most of us don't really put in the time....plus those dreams and passions fade...for some of us, myself included.

Then, as we get older, priorities shift, interests, health and just life in general take precedence...then you realize this is, and has always been, a hobby for most of us.

Perhaps that is it for me these days.

Or maybe I just want to do more and different activities that have nothing to do with the world of pool.

Time will tell...as it usually does.

Something new?

If you play all the games then this might not help, but if done, try a new game. I would never play 8 Ball for money, then I subbed in a 8 Ball league one night and lost a number of games to guys that I could spot in
9 Ball without thinking about it.

Ok, now you have my attention, I hate to lose, so here I am on the way to Vegas, on a 8 Ball team...., I would have bet you $100,000,000 that I would have never done anything like this, but its been fun.

The teams not that good, but boy do the try hard and they are great guys, its something new!
