Good morning everyone =) I have a project I have been wanting to do for a lot of years and only now has everything presented itself to do it. I just wanted the Cuemakers opinions if what I wanted to do was feasible. Elbow grease and time I have plenty of...
I still have the Mali I bought used when I was 14 years old. It served with me for 20 years in the Army, went through 1 wife, now another. It became my Sons playing cue for years in the basement pool room with me. My Son is now grown and serving in Japan with the Air Force. Anyway, lots of history, the two of us <grin.>
It has been abused with all those years of activity. Dings, cuts, slight warp in the handle area of the Butt. Cracked joint piece (completely cracked.) Faded, chipped Mali stamp. Finish is coming off the inset roses. Joint collars un-flush. Anyway, attaching a pic for you to look at. Not mine but the same exact one that is on eBay now.
I want to give her a complete facelift. Not a restore. I am wanting to change key features of her and this is where you come in. I have a very humble lathe but its motivated to help me with the job.
I want to replace the buttcap and center joint sheath(?) Not with original material. She is the most gorgeous piece of Indian Rosewood I ever seen and I would like to change the accent material to something along the Maple/Natural Fiber/Phenolic range. I searched online and found Natural Phenolic Rod to make the buttcap and joint sheath, but the buttcap length is too short. I only find it pre-cut at length of 1.125. I need 1.60 (finished length of my buttcap.) However, the more I think about it, it may be too much for my humble lathe to tackle (the shaping of the material.)
Is it possible to send my buttcap and joint sleeve to one of you to machine for me in a material that would complement Rosewood? I figured this may be the better answer being that the wrap area is warped and probably would not turn that well to do myself with files on my lathe.
My concept is to change the white areas to browns and I will be re-wrapping it with a brown leather .05mm twine ala Chuck Starkey, putting a final finish over the wrap area. I will be re-finishing the cue myself. The trim rings will remain the same as they are now.
Post was longer than I intended but I wanted to make sure I communicated what I needed.
Regards,
~Roy
