Break Time Billiards, in Wilmington, NC, will host the sixth stop of the 2009-2010 Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour this weekend, March 6-7. Players of all playing ability will assemble to compare skills and compete for up to $4200 cash in the Main Event ($1000 guaranteed for first place and $1000 guaranteed added).
Newly inducted member of the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame, Johnny “The Scorpion” Archer, has confirmed his plans to compete in this event. In addition to four World Championships, Archer is a former U.S. Open Champion (1999) and was named the 1990s’ Player of the Decade.
Also confirmed is Shawn “Big Bubba” Putnam. In three attempts on the Jacoby Tour, Putnam has won twice and finished second once. There is a good chance that several other strong players will be in attendance, as well. Now’s your chance to take a swing at some of the best players the game has to offer - not only in North Carolina, but the world! Also, it’s an excellent opportunity to get some autographs and maybe even a photo or two. Please, no flash photography whatsoever during matches.
Break Time Billiards is located at 127 S. College Rd. in Wilmington, NC (phone: 910-395-6658). We’ll be playing on the eight Diamond tables on the tournament side of the room. Steve Hebert, the room owner, always rolls out the red carpet and he’s excited about the Jacoby Tour coming through once again. Likewise, it is always a pleasure to spend a weekend in his fine establishment.
Check out Break Time’s website (www.breaktimetenpin.com) and you’ll see what a nice place this is. From the website:
“Covering over 30,000 square feet of space, Break Time Billiards Hall and Ten Pin Alley Bowling Center comprise the largest entertainment complex in Southeastern North Carolina. With 29 pool tables, 24 bowling lanes and over 20 TVs, Break Time / Ten Pin is your all in one spot for a great outing. If video gaming is more your speed, there are arcades throughout the complex with games for all ages.
From the lanes to the pool tables, we provide excellent service from our two fully stocked bars, including Lucky Strike Lounge, and our centrally located restaurant, Break Time Grille. Whether it’s an outing with friends or family, or a birthday or corporate party, our outstanding staff is here to take of all your needs.
We offer catering for private parties whether it’s big or small. We've hosted season wrap parties for the cast and crew of Dawson’s Creek and we routinely entertain gatherings for local businesses.
At Break Time Billiards and Ten Pin Alley we strive to provide all the elements to make a great night or day out. We have all the classics like foosball, air hockey, NTN trivia and Golden Tee Golf. We have delicious food, tasty drinks and the coldest beer in town!”
The Comfort Inn (“University”) is offering a reduced rate of $54.95 for players and spectators attending this event. They are located at 151 S. College Rd., which is a short stroll across the parking lot. Call them at 910-791-4841, mention “Jacoby pool tournament” and they’ll take care of you.
We’ll be starting things off with an Early Bird Tournament on Friday night at 7pm. Register for the Main Event by 12:30pm on Saturday. Races to 7 on both sides, $65 entry fee plus registration. The Junior Tournament and Ladies’ Tournament will begin on Saturday at 11:00am. Finally, we’ll have the Second Chance Tournament at 3pm on Sunday.
All four mini tournaments (Early Bird Tournament, Junior Tournament, Ladies’ Tournament and Second Chance Tournament) will be races to 5 on both sides, one race to 7 in final, $20 entry fee plus registration. Anyone can play in the mini tournaments. However, juniors must not have their 20th birthday in 2010 and, of course, only ladies in the Ladies’ Tournament.
All tournaments (Main Event, as well as mini tournaments) on the Jacoby Tour will be double elimination (modified), rack your own, winner breaks.
If you’re planning to play multiple times on the 2009-2010 Jacoby Tour, you can save quite a bit in registration fees by purchasing a 2009-2010 tour card for only $50. Registration fees are $5 for mini tournaments and $15 for the Main Event. There are 10 more events on the 2009-2010 schedule, so you can really save with a tour card.
We’ll have a Break Contest around 1:00 on Saturday. $10 entry and anyone can play. Around 4:00, we’ll do a Break-and-Run that is now at $75 per ball!!! Only players in the Main Event can buy tickets and they’re limited to 100 tickets per player, but anyone can ‘back’ a player. Tickets are 1 - $5, 5 - $20, 20 - $50 and 50 - $100.
As usual, I’ll have a really nice Jacoby that I’ll be raffling. Tickets are 1 - $5, 5 - $20, 20 - $50 and 50 - $100 and you don’t have to be present to win.
Congratulations to B. J. Ussery, who defeated Tony Morrison (11-6) in the final match at Family Billiards in Burlington to win the fifth event of the 2009-2010 season. Due to extreme weather conditions, only 4 players showed up. By the time the Main Event was to begin, a heavy blanket of snow covered North Carolina, eventually leading the governor to declare a state of emergency. Four determined players found their way to Family Billiards to see if I was really going to guarantee $1000 added and $1000 for first place. Sure enough, the show went on, albeit on a slightly delayed schedule. B. J. earned $1000 for first place, while Tony settled for $200 and second place. My thanks to the other two players braving the snow and ice, Derek Leonard and Jason Carter, who rounded out the field.
The next event will be on March 27-28 (location to be announced). As usual, it will be $1000 added and $1000 for first place plus you’ll have a chance at a minimum of $500 in the Break-and-Run!
