Marking the Table for Aim?

I don't want to mention any names but I'm pretty sure I witnessed a very well known pro from "the south" marking the table on tough cut shots and kick shots. I guess I could be dreaming this up but the following is what he would do.

1. Chalk is cue
2. Put his cue on the table behind the ball he wanted to make.
3. Twist his wrist while the cue is on the table
4. Chalk his cue again
5. Then take the shot.

Can somebody confirm or put to rest my thoughts here. I would like to know if anybody has noticed him doing this before or am I dreaming?

Thanks,

Foul, foul, foul!!!!

I have on occasion when the shot looks funny from the back set the chalk with a corner facing the rail where I want to hit . The markers are hard to see when your chin is down on your cue ;)
