Marking the weight on cues

First, let me say that I am not an accomplished player. Actually, I'm not even sure I qualify as a player at all. I enjoy the game and just play casually. I enjoy it enough that I bought a table for my home and invite friends over for a game from time to time. And rather than buy a set of the standard one piece wooden sticks, I wanted something that looked a little bit nicer - nothing too exotic and certainly nothing too expensive - just something that would somewhat match the mahogany table and give the setting a slight dressing up. I went with a Hampton Ridge 008 - burgundy stain with a linen wrap for the cues. I know most of the people on these boards would snicker at that choice, but literally I think I could probably shoot with a piece of PVC without really affecting my game and this cue had the "executive" kind of look to it that I was wanting at a very affordable price.

I decided to get a range of weights for my home cues, ranging from 18 to 21 so that guests could choose the weight of their choice just like at the local pub. And now my question is, how do I mark the cues so that people can easily tell which is which? They imprint numbers on the cheap one piece cues, but I haven't seen any good way to mark the two piece models. Surely I am not the first person to face this situation, so does anyone have a suggestion for how this is normally done? Can you buy inexpensive replacement shafts with the numbers etched in? That seems like the most attractive option. Failing that, are small stickers for this purpose available anywhere and would they hold up well with use? Any ideas or experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Find an old typewriter, rip out the numbers that you need and the put them over a flame to get them red hot then 'brand' the cues with the weight.

Well, I'm not completely convinced that will look as neat as I would like but it is the best idea I've heard so far. Thanks.

How about using rub on numbers and then covering them with clear nail polish

Try using a small circular label with the ounces marked on it, then put a layer of clear fingernail polish over it to secure it. It wont be as visible, but will display the weights.

I don't know that I would brand the cues, but why not take the same idea and brand the rubber bumpers on the butt of the cue? It would be inconspicuous (sp?) and if it didn't come out the way you wanted it to, you wouldn't have to worry about replacing a shaft or butt. Of course, you could also fill in the brand on the bumper with white paint to make it more visible. Let us know what you finally come up with.
