2014 Maryland Open 8-Ball Championship Results

May 17, 2014 – Big Daddy’s Billiards. Glen Burnie, Maryland.

Twenty nine players came out to Big Daddy’s Billiards to compete in the 2014 Maryland Open 8-ball championship. The luck of the draw had some top players facing each other in the first round with Dan Madden coming out ahead over Tony Long and Dominic Noe winning against Shaun Wilkie.

As the day progressed, Dominic Noe and Brett Stottlemyer were in top form as they moved undefeated through their respective sides of the draw to meet for the hot seat match. Brett came away the winner to move into the final.

Meanwhile, later on the one-loss side, Steve Fleming won over Matt Krah and Bruce Nagle came out ahead against Jimmy Varis. Bruce then won his next two matches against Steve and Dominic to earn the right to face Brett for the title.

The final between Bruce Nagle and Brett Stottlemyer used the tournament’s double elimination format. With Bruce coming from the one-loss side, he would have to defeat Brett twice to win.

The first race to 6 games saw a back and forth battle with Brett first to reach the hill at 5 games to 4. Bruce won the next game to make it hill-hill and then won the following rack to take the first set.

As with the first set, the deciding race to 4 games was extremely close. Bruce opened with a break and run but Brett came back to make it 1 all. Bruce moved to 2 to 1 but Brett again tied it at 2 all. Bruce countered by winning the next rack to get on the hill at 3 to 2. Bruce then took the final rack to become the 2014 Maryland Open 8-ball champion.

Thanks go out to Big Daddy’s owners Cindy and Rick Molineiro, tournament director Debbie Davis, and all of the players and fans. In addition, Ozone Billiards is gratefully acknowledged for their continuing support of the Maryland Championship series by providing a beautiful cue case to the winner of each event.
