Mcdermott bumpers question

I have 20 +/- year old Mcdermott cue in for repair and the shamrock type bumper is loose and makes a rattle noise when shooting (the weight bolt is tight). I went to change it with a brandnew one, and it's too big. Are there 2 different sizes for these? I measured the old one, the plug part is .760" and the outer top edge is 1.054", the new ones that I got from atlas are .825" and 1.087". Does anyone have the smaller size that they could part with one or two?
I don't want to re-machine the buttcap if I don't have to.
Thanks in advance,
Dave

Hi dave

I don't want you to have to machine the butt-cap either. Wouldn't be good for the originality of the cue.

Yes, there are two versions of that bumper. The older of the two is a solid plug. The new version is hollow.
My guess would be that the newer ones are designed to come out easier, at least they do for me.
Anyway, I just walked out to the shop to see what I had, thinking I may have one of the newer ones.
Turns out, the one I have is the older version, it meets your specs and you're welcome to it.
It's actually in pretty good condition and I've probably had it a while.

PM your address again and I'll get it out to you, N/C. We got biz history, Lol.

Had an afterthought. It's common to wrap the stem of these bumps with tape, masking or elec.,to take-up tolerance.
After-afterthought. If you want to swell the stem a bit, put a drop or two of brake-fluid on it.
Don't get any on the finish of the cue.

A couple more so you've got plenty of options.
I've also seen silicone adhesive used and let's not forget CA.

There are two different sizes of bumpers. I've also seen several that have developed the same "click" that you are hearing.

Here's what I do; take the bigger bumper and cut 3 slits into it at equal intervals. You may need to remove a little material. Take as little as possible to get it to fit and, once it 'snap' in, it should hold just fine.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I was hoping that they still made the smaller one, but the ideas are awesome. I have a few of the larger ones and will try that today. If it doesn't work, glue is my friend....lol
Ryan, do I have to freeze the bumper before cutting it?
