Something came up on another thread on different generations of the defy shaft and the possible reduction in the stickiness of the shaft.
Does anyone know where there would be a description of these generations? I've looked on the Mcdermott site, didn't see anything outside of the normal sales babble.

Also, does anyone have experience with more recent generations? I'm interest in whether or not the smacwrap cover has gotten any more usable because otherwise, I really liked the shaft.
Thanks

Probably would need to email or call them to find out if they swapped the finish. Last I heard a couple of months ago they were working on it.

I know the older shafts had a Black ring at the bottom of the shaft, the new ones have a grey ring, I have the one with the grey ring and never had a problem with stickiness, the ultra glide they recommend lasted weeks for me only need a couple of drops. Hope this helps

I have one of the recent generations of the shaft and have tested a number of prototype shafts. I think they are on the 4th or 5th generation of the finish. As SSP said, the gen 1 shafts have the black ring underneath but the newer versions have the grey ring. I do know they are looking to launch a new generation this summer. I have tested that version and it is really nice. The smacwrap is actually inside the shaft. It is the vibration dampening material.

Cool idea, I like how the shaft hits, to me it is a solid hit without the vibrations and noise.

So if the wrap is underneath what do you suppose makes the shaft sticky. I haven't felt any other cf shafts that were sticky.
I assumed it was the wrap.

Come to think of it, if the smacwrap is under, what is the coating?

Does the new gen they're coming out with also have the grey rings?

I have a 1st gen (or thereabouts) which is all black. It looks really sharp. I really prefer the all black look without the glaring grey rings. I don't know why they ever made that change. I'm actually trying to find another 12.5mm 855 joint 1st gen (all black) but they are really hard to come by.

It is a bit sticky but I put two drops of cue conditioner on it before I play and it's silky smooth. The one exception is if it's humid out on a summer day it does get very sticky which pretty much requires putting on a glove.

With all that said when I feel a Predator Revo shaft I'm blown away at how smooth it feels. However I didn't like the hit as much.

The new shafts will be a combination of both. The grey ring is thinner than it is now and has black under it.

I have a gen 1 defy shaft but it is quick release. If you ever want a 12mm Gen 1 for a quick release, I have one for you. :)

Anything changing outside of the ferrule color?
Thanks

Yes. The next gen shaft coming out in July is way better than the gen 1 that originally came out.
Hmmm, this makes me consider waiting until July. How would you describe the new finish? Similar to a Revo? Or Defy-esque but just not sticky? Do you think lube would have to be applied frequently? I put cue conditioner on mine before every night out playing just because I like the smooth feel.
